Wife and I are off to Koh Kood next week for a few days and will be our first time there. Plan to stay at the A Na Lay Resort. Has anyone ever stayed there and any travel info for first time visitors?

We went to Koh Kood back in 2006 and had a good time. We didnt stay at the same resort as you will be staying but I'm sure it is very close to the same thing.

You are stuck at the resort as the island is not built up at all. Non roads, No shops, No bars to go to, only nightlife is whatever the resort offers. Electric is provided via a generator that is only on at night, i cant recall but believe it came on at 6pm and turned off at 9 or 10am. i had no mobile phone service which was actually nice as no call from the office.

We went diving the one day and then lunch on a nearby island, some kayaking and relaxing on the beach. taking the boat to the island was long if i remeber correctly is was a little over an hour. If you are looking for a very quite getaway this will be the place. Hope you have a good time.

Best way is from Laem Sok Pier ... you should be able to get your resort to book you onto the koh kood princess ferry 700bt return and they operate a shuttle bus from pier to resort and back included in the price.

The koh kood Princess ferry is made of metal, takes around 1.30hrs and leaves at 1230pm - it has an air conditioned lower cabin and open upper

The resort I stayed at had electric all day however the aircon only operated from 6pm to 8am.

Bear in mind this is "green season" and very quiet

Probably the worst stay I ever had in Thailand in 6 years. When we came we get the first bungalow it was surrounded of a smell of poope and pie and the inside smell was very bad too. And tv as it should have been. So I complained and got another bungalow it was better but when I was going to turn on aircon in the night didn't work. And they had some berrytree so it was falling fruits all night it sounded like someone throw stones on the roof every 10min. So almost no sleep. And do NOT rent a bike here! I had to change two times because there was no breaks and the third one wasn't good either. So I left one day earlier.. The staff wasn't helpful at all.

We just moved from this horror hotel. We running like in the film, because we affraid of the manager (Mr. Mad-Eye) - he looks like bad character on some thriller about hounded hotels, he follow us with his stuff, and he is really unfriendly. The room (air-con room with sea view) was terrible. A lot of bugs (ants, spiders), dirty bed, rocks and roots in bathroom, stinky air from air conditional, wet... People who work there, are like a zombie's, the don't speak english very well, and they looking at You, like a zombie. Food and kitchen was really bad. I like one thing in this place, nice beach and view - quiet and peacefull bay, one of most amazing on island, but You can visit this place for a moment with scooter.

Room Tip: try with pool-side room

we have been there last year same time at Koh Kood Beach Resort Not much customers, daily rain. Many resorts are closed because off season. Buffet in Resorts were changed to poor food.

Most important: Because of high wind and sea beaches are dirty with all that staff from the ocean: empty bottles, sharp edged rosting tins and cans, oil, and weed. Swimming impossible. In this case it was good to have a huge pool.

Not a good idea to go now I suggest.

Stayed at Shantaa Resort last November---excellent! And the the 1 hour boat stops at the resort.

Be sure you know what your place offers and whether it is good because there not much to do outside of where you stay. Great for pure relaxation.

I was at The Natural Beach Resort last weekend. Great rooms and great staff. It has a natural bay so pretty sheltered for swimming and kayaking.

Food was a bit salty but plentiful. The Sea View villas were clean cosy and although not the most modern were great value.

It rained just part of one day Friday and I had a great time .

I guess it depends on where you stay

I went to Koh Kood 3 times. During the off season. Almost drowned on the way in once ( the boat DID go down 1 month later) Long story short: If you do go there, bring your own bike (there's a "slow" boat (a sturdy fishing vessel!) going from Laeng Gnop every second day), and bring your own food. OR be prepared to order 2 days in advance in your resort, and pay 2/3 times the price. We went hungry for the first 2 days, because the resort's food was just inedible. Honestly, just fill up a huge styrofome container (150 baht, corner of the market) in Trat with fish and prawns and meat and fowl, top up with ice (50 baht), and you can live like kings on Koh Kood. The resident staff will love you for it, and be happy to do some cookin'.

Thanks for all the replies. We went to Koh Kood last week and we stayed two nights at the A Na Lay Resort and had two non-air cabins for B1000 each which included a set breakfast. The resort is a bit dated but our cabin was comfortable. There were only 8 other guests so hardly crowded but that was just fine with us. Weather was great but we were lucky as we were told the previous week they had lots of rain. If you're looking for night life then stay in Pattaya.

I think things have improved since your visit in 2006. Roads are all paved, we had 24 hour electricity, free wifi in the cabin. The ferry took 1 1/2 hours, B700 r/t which included drop off and pickup to/from your hotel. Mobile phone service was fine. We enjoyed the visit and plan to go back one of these days.

Presently on Kood having arrived earlier today and staying at Koh Kood Beach Resort. First time here and first impressions are quite positive. Have been to Samet, Chang, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket, Phi Phi, and Pha-Ngang over the past twenty years all of which have seen rapid development. Kood appears poised on that spot between nowhere e.g. unpaved roads and bamboo huts and development to the point of saturation e.g. the Bangkok hoards a la Pai.

We are planning on exploring over the next few days and are looking forward to it.

Shut the f*** up! In 5 years it will be like Samet. Are you guys stupid?

Koh Kood is a little more off the beaten track and requires two ferries to get to, it will take a long time to get spoiled like other islands.

The fact that it is remote and relatively unspoilt by comparison is it's only selling point, it is known as a retreat island. The day it becomes overrun, while still requiring extra effort to reach, it can forget about visitors.

Did you say two ferries to get to Koh Kood? We only took one, the Kohkood Princess, B700 r/t. http://www.kohkoodprincess.com/th/

I thought you could get only from Koh Chang, good to know.

Cooked, what is the issue? You think the place is going to get overrun because of a few pictures on TVF?

The Koh Kood ferry departs from Laem Sok which is about 20 km south of Trat (city). They have a secure parking area there too for ferry passengers.
