Am looking at a piece of land behind the Mrs' house near Khon Kaen to perhaps extend the yard. Problem is there is a huge artificial pond on it. The land is roughly 240 sq wah and the pond covers about 75% of it. I don't think it's very deep as the owners only use it to raise a handful of ducks and occasionally fish it for leisure.

We got one quote so far but was taken aback when the guy who specialises in this type of thing quoted us 350k. We'll be seeking other quotes but would like to get some comments from people with experience in this. Assuming it's 2m deep at it's deepest point, what cost might you expect roughly? And what might the difference in cost be in filling the land for the purpose of creating a garden vs building a house?

Also, whats the ideal composition of fill material for each purpose? And what's the best way to ensure the contractor abides by whatever composition is agreed to? Anything else I should be aware of? I'm sure it's painfully obvious I don't have a clue about land foundations rolleyes.gif

The reason the land has a "pond" is that the owner sold the soil.

It would have been dug out and trucked off to raise someone else's land.

You now have to buy soil from some other land owner and refill the hole.

Farmers were given good prices for their soil, but then found out that they are left with a useless piece of land; can't grow anything or build on it, only let nature fill it with water and use it as a "pond".

As it's just a hole, the soil being long gone, you should get it at a cheap price.

The costly part will be buying soil to fill it back up!

Ok I will help with the quantities:

Your 240 wah is the equivalent of 960m2 and you guesstimate 75%of that needs filling.

So thats 720m2 x 2m deep= 1440m3

I would reckon on loosely compacted soil weighing around 1 ton per cube (compacted 1.25; concrete 1.5-2, timber 0,70)

So if you so desired to fill it with concrete!! then you can order it yourself, sit back and watch 2.8 million bt spew into the hole(1440m3x 2000bt/m3)

Of course that would be silly; but the volume/weight is going to be around 1500 tons. In other words 150no 10 ton wagon loads.

Others will be able to be able to clarify how much they paid per load for bringing fill in (must admit I thought I had read 500bt for 10 ton and 1000bt for a 20 ton but i may be way off)

So in conclusion I would say you are looking at a cost of 75,000 baht. (assuming my load figures are anywhere near correct)

**of course you need to plumb the depths also, BEFORE you let anyone quote you.

We has a pool dug out and yes, we sold the earth. It is now a source of water, that other farmers nearby don't have, and we take enough fish out to sell occasionally. Get yourself over to the farmers forum and learn about fish farming.

Duck breeding is a good business too.

My Thai friend has a soil moving businesses, he charges 300baht/truck including tractor, I don't know how much each truck holds, but I have used him to fill part of our land and he gives a good truck load.

Had another guy before his truck loads was not full.

Yes it is have done before, but better if you are breeding to sell to eat to not have a pond as if you let the ducks swim they lose weight.

If you can get it at a good price turn the pond into a feature, landscape it, bang some fish in and a few geese to piss of the neighbours :)

Eat the fish and eggs, use the water when there's none elsewhere.

why not make a fishing park.thai's love their fishing,a few catfish and a few dozen of those big ugly sounds like swaiy who fight like mad when hooked.

no need to replace them as nobody takes them home.

could aslo get a few esoke.they eat well.

some ducks,

Found out the owners did indeed sell the soil. So I probably underestimated the depth by a long shot. Must definitely plumb the depth. Even if it's 6m deep, that might cost roughly 225k going by eyecatcher's comments. Will report back.

Edit: some of you are probably kidding but anyway fishing for leisure is not something I'm comfortable with, and as much as I'd like to try fish farming, the land is in a residential area so I don't think that would work either. Aquaponics on the other hand could be plausible. Would still have to shrink the size of the pond significantly though.

I know someone who went through this some years back.

Unfortunately, when the soil is delivered and dumped into the hole it will be loose - not tightly packed.

They might run a few lorries over it to help tamp it down; you then wait for a full rainy season for the water to compact it further.

After that you will need more soil to bring the height up above the final height you want.

Then wait for another rainy season to further compact it.

I think the cost will be above the figure you are working on for each fill.

I only had to buy enough soil to raise a rice field above the height I wanted.

After a couple of rainy seasons it was compacted to the height needed for a house build.

i fish the one behind the mall in korat, you need a good strong rod with around 30lb.line and some grabs to hold some bait, bread and some flavouring and a bloody lot of strenght, when you do manage to get them on the bank its photo time and back into the water for someone else to enjoy.

but to catch around 6 in a session is bloody hard work.

when these fish hit the bait you need to be very close to your rod/reel with the clutch off so the line will strip off faster than you can say[wow look at her]

lately i havnt been very active as the tension is toooooo much.

but its great.

most are catch and release, some you can buy your catch, don't think there are many catch and keep type of places
