Death of someone you know is always a shock. And sometimes , how you hear it makes it like a physical blow.

I just saw, in another thread, that John Moore has passed away. It said sometime earlier this year.

Some of the old timers may remember him as the owner of Pun Pun Guest House more than 12 years back. He and his wife, Daeng, had a doll baby of a little girl, and named her Demi. John , in those days, seemed to have a thing for Demi Moore. More than just a similarity of name.

Hard times back then made it necessary for him to sell Pun Pun and move back to England where for a time he drove a cab. Three or Four years later he came back to Thailand and started the Archery thing.

If anyone should know the circumstances of his passing, please post. He was way too young to die of middle age.

Thoughts and prayers to Daeng and Demi. May he rest in peace

It was a heart attack.

I did not know John but the wife of a good friend of mine is involved in their archery business, a link to this thread has been sent to her.

It was because of a heart attack. John passed away on January 17th, 2009. As fate would have it, he had come to Thailand unannounced to surprise Daeng and Demi. After only a couple days of being here, he had breakfast, felt ill and was subsequently taken to the hospital. He passed away due to a heart attack that same day. I believe he was only 55.

Daeng is a very sweet lady, and she and Demi loved John very much. I, like JxP, never had the pleasure of meeting John. I only moved to CM about seven months ago and met Daeng through mutual friends. She helped me a lot when I first arrived, and one of my first memories of her was how she always talked excitedly about John, Demi and their future plans together. It was a tragic loss for their family.

The funeral was held at a wat in Old CM. I was overwhelmed by the turnout for his funeral. Both Thai and farang friends came to pay their respects. Family and friends had even traveled across the world to be there. Even though I never met John, by the end of the four day Buddhist ceremony, I felt as though I had known him. Tales about John were shared by Thais and westerners alike. You couldn't help but gain respect for John when so many people had nothing but good things to say about him.

It never crossed my mind to post to TV announcing his funeral in January. In retrospect, I really regret not thinking about it as I’m sure there are many more of John’s friends, like Gonzo, who are only finding out now. I apologize for this as I believe this is a prime example of what TV can be positively used for.

I’m sure any support you can offer his family, moral or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated. While Daeng and Demi are slowly recovering, they’re always comforted by the love and support of friends, both past and present. John will be missed by many.

Daeng has seen this thread and seems to have been touched by your sentiments and would like to make contact but, as is the nature of a forum she does not know who you are. I suspect from your post, brycat, that you are in contact with her anyway but I don't think Gonzo is.

I have been given Daeng's number to pass on to you if you would like to contact her. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to send me a PM with whatever contact details you would like to pass on and I'll send her number to you by return.

Yes, I could have done all of the above by PM but I figured if anyone else wanted to contact John's family then they would now have a way to do so.

I do keep in contact with Daeng and will let her know it was I who wrote the post. Thanks for forwarding this thread to her JxP.

I knew John Moore for 15 years.

A friend recently told me that he heard John had died, but was not certain, now these posts confirm it. I’m saddened to hear the news.

Before I moved permanently to Thailand in 2003, we often met back in England between our trips to LOS.

He lived with his mother, who I met, at the family home in Barnet North London. John often stayed at my house in Hayes, Middlesex and we ate together at our favourite Thai restaurant, the Thai Castle in Harrow Weald, Middlesex.

Over here we socialised quite often, first at his Pun Pun guesthouse and later I visited his Archery club in Mae Rim. We often enjoyed wild nights out in Chiang Mai and believe me, I could tell you a tale or two. I’m laughing to myself now thinking about it.

John was a wonderful guy, great sense of humour, but he did lead rather a hectic life.

Sadly about 3 years ago, John disappeared off the scene from my social circle and we lost contact. John was like that; he would disappear than suddenly turn up on the doorstep.

His wife Daeng would remember me, but I do not have her contact phone number.

If anyone has her contact details I would greatly appreciate if they would PM me with the details. I don’t wish to give my name out on here, but tell her I am a friend of Mike Cooke. I know she would love to hear from me at this time.

Marty "Buckwheat" Schulte passed away on the 4th of April.

There is a thread in General Topics here dedicated to Marty.

For those of you who may not know, Marty was the man responsible for the ribs at the Thai Visa BBQ's at Tuskers.

May be nice if someone , a "KIND" Wordsmith, would write a few lines about David Crisp, of recent passing. Much has been written but maybe it would be nice to have him among the others on this list.

I've been away for a while and, on return, am a little sad to find that no-one has responded to this most reasonable invitation.

Sad that no expats directly involved in David's excellent acapella music group 'The Spirit House Singers' responded, for example. I saw him in musical action and was vastly impressed by his professional, optimistic and encouraging attitude towards his amateur volunteers.

I don't share his choice of lifestyle, or indeed his choice of music, but did share his interest in old cars. I always found him to be cheerful and positive, and it's a great shame he left us in such tragic circumstances.

Since I returned, a very senior Thai police detective took me on one side and asked if I knew David. When I said I did, he made quite a sensitive remark, given all the sensational media speculation about his murder. He said:

"Please tell all his friends that the motive was robbery, nothing else!" And so it seems to be. Two alleged culprits arrested and pleaded guilty, one hiding in Burma somewhere.

Lastly, the late English John Moore, ex Pun Pun, was the soccer mad guy. Not the older Brit with the same name who is our local insect expert. I can't join in the eulogies for this late JM, but no point in speaking badly of those who have passed on.

That explains why the ribs at this past June's party missed the mark. I really loved Buckwheat's ribs I had at the previous 2 BBQs at Tuskers.

RIP Marty.

This post does not bring with it any bad news. I Hope.

Several people have told me that they had wanted to post regarding persons that had past on, but were unable to find this thread. I must admit, I was unable to search it out either. I had to go page by page back about 30 pages to find it.

I post this only to bring it up closer to the front and hopefully easier for those in time of need , to find.

Mods, as several others have stated, would you please consider "PIN' ing this thread , hopefully then it would be easier to find.

Well sad news time again... I have just been informed that another of our long time expat friends has passed on . Lou Collins, big tall Lou, from Kentucky in the US.

Apparently he, his housekeeper and her daughter were involved in a auto accident this past Friday night. He passed early Saturday morning in a local hospital. The housekeeper , Nui , and her daughter, Kanom, are in serious, but not critical condition in the hospital. Our prayers are with them.

Details on the accident and other arrangements , have not yet been forwarded, but will be posted as soon as more information is available.

RIP Lou. The boys in the DG will miss your Friday jovial input....

Well, I met David Crisp outside a 7Eleven as both he and I were admiring a lovely little Mini Clubman... we got chatting and I found out he played piano (a total understatement on his part) and he found out I love to sing... at the time I was trying to find someone to help me to rehearse some songs that I sang in a 'cabaret' a group of us did at The Fondue House... he said he'd help me... the next week I was off to his place with my music and we spent many happy hours rehearsing and chatting and drinking copious amounts of tea... sometimes I'd take him home made biscuits (cookies) and cake... he told me he was thinking about starting up a madrigal group... which I joined for one season...

What an amazing guy, so humble, so talented, so sweet... never gossiped - even over hours of cups of tea....you know, major opportunity...

I was so very sad, actually, devastated over his untimely death and still miss David often. Chiang Mai has definitely lost a very special person as have I.

Also RIP Ron Kasdan... singer with Spirit House Singers and member of Gate Theatre... he passed away after slipping into a coma while having surgery...

And Roger (sorry, can't recall his family name)... British fellow who sang with Chiang Mai Choral Society a couple of times and who sadly, felt he could no cope with life any longer and therefore took it from himself...

With the passing of all three of these sweet guys, I have resolved to spend more time with people, more time drinking cups of tea and coffee with friends and acquaintances and more time with my husband and three boys... :) Carpe Deum... (hope I spelled this correctly)

I live in Lou's building.

They had a Buddhist bathing ritual at Maharaj/Suan Dok mortuary today.

I didn't go, but I read in a notice here that there might be a memorial service scheduled for the 14th Nov.

If anyone has any further info, please post it.

Lou was a kind and gentle soul.

At last word there was to be a Memorial Service for Lou on the 14th. I should be able to get the info on where and what time, and then post tomorrow afternoon or evening.

Still no particulars on his passing.

Now we have another expat to add to the list. I did not know this man but his name was Barry and was apparently known around the Thapae Gate area. He was from Canada . The word I had was that he was found dead in a guest house around Thapae Gate.

Barry from Canada. If anyone has any more information, please add it, as I'm sure there are friends and accquaintances out there who would like to give their final respects

LOu suffered massive head wounds following a collision with an 18 wheel lorry. He and passengers (both recovering now and out of hospital ) were returning from Pitsanulok in a brand new Pick-up truck, when the incident occured.

He was a lovely and most amiable man, knowledgeable of world and local affairs, modest and always a delight to be with as he was such a great/brilliant conversationalist, witty and a practical joker. He was a giant in more ways than one and possessed that rare quality of making everybody feel important including the downtrodden , doing menial jobs for low pay and little recognition.

This wise owl will be dearly missed and not be forgotten. RIP. A memorial service ,yet to be confirmed , is likely to be on the 21st Nov. 2009

A nice fellow and a rib wizard! :)

We have lost another nice fellow - who was a wizard at tickling your ribs with his amusing and erudite conversation: Neil Lawson, the original genial host of The White Lotus restaurant & bar at the junction of Loi Kroh and Charoenprathet.

Panita at the UK Consulate told me a few days ago that Neil had succumbed to cancer in his native USA. On his regular stints here from his job, managing civilian aircraft maintenance in the Middle East, he was consistent good company and one of CM's best ever Santa Claus, complete with authentic white beard. RIP
