LIVERPOOL:-- ROMELU LUKAKU has been trained to become a lifesaver – by sniffing out dangers which cost hundreds of lives every year.

But this isn’t Big Rom, the Everton centre-forward who sniffed out 20 goals last season.

A Belgian social enterprise group which trains rats in the art of land mine detection has named one of its prized animals after the Everton striker!

APOPO, a group which researches, develops and implements detection rats technology for use in Cambodia, Angola, Thailand and Mozambique, tweeted Lukaku today to say “Hey @RomeluLukaku9, we’ve named a future life saver after you! This guy will safely detect landmines. #soccer #efc

The group has also given another lifesaving rat the name of Vincent Kompany.

Meet landmine-detecting rats called 'Vincent Kompany' and 'Romelu Lukaku' who are helping make Cambodia safer

Football stars Vincent Kompany and Romelu Lukaku put their bodies on the line most weekends for their teams but a pair of smaller namesakes are proving to be much more heroic.

Meet the landmine-detecting rats who have helped a charity clear a staggering 18 MILLION square metres of mineland across Africa and make life much safer for thousands of people.

The latest additions to the team have been given the names of Premier League starts Vincent Kompany and Romelu Lukaku after their heroic efforts on their field of 'play'.

Part of a group of giant rodents called HeroRATS, Kompany and Lukaku are put to work in some of the most dangerous parts of the world to sniff out unexploded landmines.

Specially trained, the rats will search the ground for the deadly devices and then start scratching the floor once they come across one.

At this point, a human expert arrives, takes the rats away to a safe place and then proceeds to make the landmine safe.
