STOCKHOLM: -- A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute published recently indicates that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) spent a total amount of US$1.36 billion last year to import weapon systems from various foreign nations – including Sweden.

Russia remains China’s largest foreign military supplier according to the report. Beijing spent a total of US$909 million to purchase weapons from Russia between 2013 and 2014.

Unknown to the public, NATO member France is currently China’s second most important arms supplier. A total of US$230 million was spent to purchase French weapons last year. Between 2009 and 2013, China was in fact the largest overseas military market for France.

And despite the European Union’s arms embargo on China, various western countries including the UK, Sweden and Germany provided weapons to the PLA.

While China spent US$40 million to purchase the second batch of LR7 rescue submarines from the UK, Germany made US$6 million from China om diesel engines designed to power battle tanks and submarines, and Sweden sold its fire-control radar and munition GDF35 anti-aircraft gun for US$65 million.

Sweden has form here. They supplied weapons, ammunition and raw materials to BOTH sides during WWII.

Nice to have your cake and eat it too eh.

The headline is a minor distraction...the story really is about Russia, France, and Germany.

The United States is not selling arms to the CCP Dictators in Beijing or to Russia or to Iran.

Not to Iran since the money grubber Reagan (and his Ollie North who took the fall).

As for Thailand, it has always bought its Navy from Beijing so the Thai Navy is a collection of slug rust buckets that can't travel or shoot in a straight line. This was the career lucrative work of one Chavalit, now retired and still enjoying the benefits.

The Thai Army with the exception of the lighter Swiss tanks is a collection of US Army equipment, weaponry, systems.

The Air Force is almost entirely an assemblage of USAF planes, equipment, weaponry and training.

Here's the Thai aircraft carrier which has no aircraft actually underway with the USS George Washington CVN 73, the oldest US carrier and now being overhauled.

The Navy bought its listing and perpetually lame aircraft carrier from Spain and it is now the smallest semi-functioning aircraft carrier in the world.

Weapons technology from Germany and Sweden is excellent but very expensive due in large part to limited production. Weapons technology from France includes a popup white flag.
