Govt to reclaim misused land along Chao Phraya River for public use

BANGKOK, 2 August 2015 (NNT) - In a new move to revamp land use in the capital city, the government has announced its plan to reclaim areas of misappropriated land along the Chao Phraya River.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has instructed the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and related agencies to survey houses and other constructions that have encroached on parts of both banks of the Chao Phraya River and along the canals.

Residents living in the areas of illegal encroachment will be requested to relocate. The BMA has been assigned to offer them new land plots at affordable prices. The reclaimed land will be developed for public use. Related agencies have been tasked with clarifying the objectives of the land reclamation.

According to a survey by the Marine Department, constructions which protrude into the river and canals across the capital city number 2,034, most of which are piers, pipes, barrages and bridges.

And where will those 'affordable' plots be? Still in central Bangkok? Out in the swamps of Samut Prakan, more likely. This is a just a way of pushing the poor out of their homes so they can be developed for the vast profit of the Elite. Redeveloped for 'public use' !!! ha ha ha! Still, i suppose high end shopping malls are kind of for 'public use'- certainly for the kind of 'public' that the junta represents.

Evicting squatters and offering affordable land some how strikes me as a fail train leaving the station kinda policy.
