I'd like to know what I've come in contact with, and how to reduce the somewhat painful itching.

This week I've been out in the yard and surrounding areas doing a bit of aggressive weed pulling. I know from past experience that gloves are a good idea, so I think I was wearing gloves during the whole operation. Nonetheless, I've (again) come into contact with something that is creating a bit of swelling on a couple fingers and even a very small blister or two.

From past experience I'm confident that the pain and swelling will subside in a few days or a week at most. But what the heck is the plant that's causing this nasty itch? Does Thailand have poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac? No doubt there are several--if not many--other poisonous plants here.

  • Does anyone have photos or names of plants to watch out for?
  • And, what have you found to be the best remedy for relief of the pain?

Thanks very much.

I haven't seen any caterpillars around here for years.

No, I believe the itch comes from a plant, and I get myself itching every once in a while because every once in a while I declare war on the weed growth around my place. You'd think I'd learn. I'm trying; that's why I'm asking.

Buy a little small tin of "Sam Buck" and after your HOT shower....rub it into the itchy area....gone in 10 minutes.

Dont be too worried....I get that all the time. That is something you have to get used to, if you are going to work in the yard.....

I never heard of Sam Buck. Who sells it? Thanks for the tip, by the way.

Thanks, everyone. Now I know how to reduce the damn itching. I'll give it a go.

What I still don't know is: What is the plant that causes the itching? Any photos of what I should avoid?

Yes i know they are used in cheese and i know pretty well what they look like.

If memory serves me well i even have seen tall ones in Thailand somewhere. But i just checked the place where they grew and no new ones are popping up yet. If they do i'll make a pic for you.

Here nettles in Chiangmai there sting like hell

Young nettles don't sting as much as adult ones.

But in Europe we also have the dove-nettle (is that english?) It looks the same but has white flowers which you can suck out and taste sweet. They are used to stop the pain from the stinging nettles.

Are those also in Thailand?
