I bought a Nuvi well over 3 years ago and had one map upgrade done at ESRI shortly afterwards. The device now has a few problems with the main one being a long delay before the map displays with a blank or stripey grey screen for a long period after turning on. More recently, it has started randomly toggling between day and night mode and/or initializing a spurious new satellite search. Last night coming back from Bangkok, it suddenly flashed a half-black screen advising that my software was fake and need to contact ESRI; that happened twice in an hour. I am pretty sure that the battery needs replacing as well as map firmware flashing, etc.. What's the capabilities at ESRI? Do they handle more complex hardware issues like batteries or do they need to send it somewhere?

Sorry but I dont know what ESRI is. As far as software and updates go, you can do that all yourself on line. Very simple straightforward process using Garmin tools.

Ref the battery.

I have a nuvi 3750 and recently inquired about having the battery changed at the GPS shop in MBK. He does some electrical work on GPS's in the shop but the guy told me they don't change batteries on my model.

Thanks for the info. It's a Nuvi 3770 and I will use the Garmin Updater to do the software and maps first. Beyond that, I can take it to ESRI and if it only takes them a couple of weeks to get it sorted in Taiwan then that's fine. I had read somewhere else that Garmin doesn't (easily) allow owners and third parties to do battery changes. I had a handheld Garmin GPS that got toasted on a car dashboard here a few years ago. I had a buddy take it back to the US (where I had bought it) and Garmin did a no-cost mainboard and antenna replacement since the warranty is lifetime. I only had to pay postage to my buddy's place and he brought it back to Thailand.

OK, did the software updates and it's working like a brand new one again. Just need to see if it has solved the grey screen when turned on first thing in the morning.
