You don't plant potatoes from seed. You use potatoes that have started to sprout. You can cut up one potato and plant sections that have sprouts. You could buy "seed potatoes," but it's probably unnecessarily expensive to look for them. As Innerspace said, just buy a bag of potatoes and encourage them to sprout. Voila.

easiest way to buy seed potatoes are bookshops and pharmacies in located in buildings with two stories where the potatoes are kept in upper story.

reason: seed potatoes prefer high altitudes to sprout.

Seed potatoes refers to potatoes that are prepared for planting. So that disposes of about half of the clever comments on this topic.

Potatoes will sprout here. That's all they do. They stay sprouted for a few months and then die. Maybe up in Chang Rai they might grow. I just buy my Chinese/ Australian potatoes in Makro, really cheap.

There are loads and loads of different potato's on the world.

But in Thailand i noticed that supplier carries another variety lately. I 'm so happy with that that i bought 10 kg, they last for months in the fridge.

The one they sell now is hard, even after boiling too long. Also it taste's great. We always thought that they are not done yet but they are just very solid ones, perfect for steaming and frying as well.

Yes, tomorrow is potato day for us, getting hungry allready.

Just a quickie, potatoes as bought in the shops are often treated with a weed killer (!) to prevent them from sprouting.

If you can grow tomatoes (I can't) then you will probably be able to grow potatoes.(tomato wilt, fusarium...).

When I lived in Ohio, US, I used old tires and put mounds of sandy dirt in them. I had lots of good luck and lots of potatoes. I tried that here upcountry and the plants seemed to grow well. When the vines browned and died, I dug up the potatoes. Other than a few marble sized, it was a waste of time. That was my only try. I used old potatoes bought from the local market that had sprouted. Using old tires eliminates digging. Just lift the side of the tire and sort through the dirt.

As a side note, I have no luck growing tomatoes. And no, It's not the dirt. I also tried using nursery sterilized soil. Same results full sun, partial sun and shade.. I also killed tomato plants with too much fertilizer. Maybe I just don't have a green thumb. I put a lot of time and effort trying tomatoes. A friend of mine brought five different kinds of seeds meant to grow in Florida. A nice guy here on the forum sent me a number of different local seeds. I even tried aquaculture but apparently the guppy tanks don't provide enough nutrients. The blossoms kept falling off. All plant and no tomatoes.
