Residency Certificate with Tourist Visa from Chaengwattana? For Motorbike

Hey,

I have been trying to find out what I need to buy a second hand motobike legally. After few days of googling I've understood I need a residency certificate from Chaengwattana which is done on the same day. Now after reading several Thaivisa threads, however, I am a little confused what exactly do I need to bring and that it might take 3 weeks? I need to buy the bike tomorrow.

I'm on a single entry tourist visa, renting a condo in my name and looking to buy a second hand motorbike. Can I go to Chaengwattana with my tourist visa to get the certificate on the same day?

I can't be of great help, as your question is very specific, and I hope a few members here will offer good advice. However I will try to look into the case if I was the Immigration officer in person. I would wonder why , if you are a 'tourist' , are renting a condo (for how long?) and buy a motorcycle, if not for the purpose of staying in Thailand longer.

This alone disqualifies you from being a 'real' tourist, in my eyes ( and in those of some immi officers) . . . I would smell a rat . . do you intend to work illegally in Thailand ? If your rental contract is for one year, i would be VERY suspicious of you . . . . .

But on the other hand, if you have a short time rental contract from a thai landlord, I don't see any why they should refuse you the residence certificate. Did your landlord already notify the immigration of your stay ? ( they are required to do so by law withing 48 hours of you moving in). The contract and your passport is normally all you need to show. You will have to bring 2 (or 3?) passport size photos and 3 signed by yurself copies each of your passport main page and the page with the visa

If your request is for 3 + 3 months of stay with a tourist visa, and they refuse a residence certificate, it is cheaper to rent the motorcycle on a monthly rate, which can be had in most places for around 3000 THB

Thanks for the reply. My condo rental contract is 12 months indeed, but I just arrived to Thailand and my last visit was in December. I'm planning to join a course in 2 months and get an ED visa after, but for now I first entered with the tourist visa to take time to look at my options here. I'm not certain, but I would imagine the landlord has done so.

I mean you could always be here on a tourist visa looking for a job, planning to get a non-b once you find it, and that would be a perfectly legit explanation in my eyes.

Just wondering if I need the certificate for the moment I go pick up the bike, or if the name on the green book can be transferred to my name later on?

I had a years condo lease,Bank accounts etc. But no go,sorry but not worth wasting your time going(unless it's changed within the last year)

As far as I know, you won't even be able to put the bike in your name at the Department of Land Transportation, can't buy vehicles on a tourist visa (legally that is).

Up to you about putting in the girlfriends name,people do keep the green book in the old owners name. But I believe you have to have a copy of their ID/passport etc,to register it later. Best to look on here for info.

P.S I brought a new Toyota on a tourist visa (and I believe you can even buy a vehicle on a visa exemption),I got the certificate from my local Amphur in Kanchanaburi. Some Police stations will also do a certificate,but just depends on the office and which way the wind is blowing! [emoji17].

Like others mentioned, bike can be bought with any kind of visa to your name if you have the residency sertificate which will be the issue here. CW doesn't issue those for the people with tourist visa.

Come spend a month in Pattaya, get letter from hotel stating you have booked for a month, get res cert and register it here.

OR

Or ask your landlord for the papers to get a yellow house book. You can get a yellow house book even if you are a renter. Yellow house book can be used in place of Res Cert for doing the bike registration.

Yellow house book also works to get Thai prices at places that no longer accepts a Thai drivers license to get Thai price, like Khao Yai park.

Thanks, just bought the bike and got the green book with copies of the previous owners' ID for changing it later.

Can it cause any trouble to keep the bike in the old owners name, like for insurance if you have a crash?

If the bikes taxed etc,the basic Government insurance is on the bike(well that's how it works on Cars and trucks)Any extra insurance you'll have to ask the insurance company,if it needs to be in your name.

The dealer needs it to register the bike. Work permit also states your address. Will be just as fine with a residency cert, but keep in mind, a residency cert is only valid for 30 days.

The dealer needs it to register the bike. Work permit also states your address. Will be just as fine with a residency cert, but keep in mind, a residency cert is only valid for 30 days.

I think it's a bit longer than 30, maybe 60 or 90 dayss.

Whatever, it's a ball ache for me to get them, immigration issue me two at a time and I after a bit of talking, successful used 6 month old ones to transfer a bike title and apply for my 5 year license.

Probably wouldn't work with a big name dealer, mind.
