Embassy reacts to arrest of suspects; police chief does not consider blasts terrorist attacks

BANGKOK: -- TURKEY is seeking clarification from Thailand over reports that linked Turkish nationals to the Bangkok bombings last month.

The police chief for the first time said he believed the bombings were the work of those who stood to lose from the government's crackdown on transnational human trafficking.

Turkey's embassy in Bangkok issued a statement yesterday in response to news reports that several Turkish nationals were wanted in connection with last month's bombing in the Thai capital. The Erawan Shrine bombing killed 20 people and injured more than 100 others. Another blast happened the following day near Sathorn Pier, without causing any casualties.

"Up to now, this Embassy has not received any official notification from the Thai authorities concerning the arrest warrants," the Turkish embassy in Bangkok said in its statement.

The authorities have issued nine arrest warrants in connection with the bombings. The ninth suspect, arrested in Sa Kaew on Tuesday, has been identified as Yusufu Mieraili.

According to its statement, the Turkish embassy has requested clarification by sending a verbal note to Thailand's Foreign Affairs Ministry, asking if the suspect arrested on August 29 is a Turkish citizen and requesting details about the Turkish passports televised in the news.

National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree, meanwhile, reiterated yesterday that Emrah Davutoglu, one of the nine suspects for whom arrest warrants have been issued, was a Turkish national.

He also urged people to avoid making comments that could mislead or confuse the public regarding the ongoing investigations into the Bangkok bombings and the nationality of the suspects.

"We have teams of specialists and experts who have been solving the cases with utmost caution and efforts," Winthai said. "Police will definitely investigate further to determine the exact motives of the blasts".

He added that people could help by simply alerting the authorities if they detect any suspicious people or activities.

"And if you have information on the Erawan Shrine and Sathorn Pier blasts, call 1515," Winthai said.

Police Spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thavornsiri said the nationality of the two men now in custody in connection with the bombings is not yet known.

"We have to wait for reconfirmation from countries involved before we can conclude on the nationality," he said.

When asked about the motive for the bombings, national police chief Pol General Somyot Poompanmuang said he believed the bombs were planted by those who stood to lose from the government's crackdown on human trafficking. However, he was quick to add that it would be too early to dismiss other issues as possible motives because the gathering and examination of evidence were still ongoing.

Somyot said that judging from the elements involved, the recent bombings did not qualify as terrorist attacks. He said several tests were being carried out and it could not be confirmed whether or not the two suspects in custody planted the bombs.

Prawut said it would take about a few more days for the DNA test results to be released.

"But preliminary investigations confirm that these two suspects were involved in the two bomb blasts," he said. The suspect arrested in Sa Kaew province on Tuesday had bomb-making instructions in his possession.

"Experts will determine exactly what type of bomb was covered by the instructions," Prawut said.

Of the nine suspects facing arrest, one is Wanna Suansan, a Thai woman.

Both she and her Turkish husband are wanted in connection with the bombings.

"We have contacted Interpol for help in bringing them to Thai police," Prawut said, adding that police were not sure whether the couple was now in Turkey.

............And why is a Chinese passport being shown when the article is about Turkey?

I'm confused.

funny, fingerprints match in a day, but no taxi driver ID yet of the two in custody.

How long would it take to run over to the Chinese embassy and check Yussufs passport?

Can't do that, as might confirm he is a Uighur.

Foreigners let a bomb off that kills twenty and it is not terrorism???

Lots of read between the line here from police, my guess is pressure from China as they executed some deported Uighurs and who deported them?

And wait there is more, top immigration police transfered from Sa Kaew for letting Uighurs into Thailand.

Police deny suspect was aprehended in Cambodia even though international media claim this as well as Phnom Phen Post, why deny??

My theory is Cambodia dont want to sour relations with China and if this guy was handed over to China instead maybe he dissapear for ever.

Cambodia deported a lot of Uighurs in 2009 from SA Kaew area against apeals from United Nations and other human rights organisations, some of these were executed some recieved Jail terms one of them was named Yussuf.

After Cambodia did what they were told by China and deported these people in a chartered jet Chinese officials went to Cambodia and signed up contracts and loans for them.

There is a lot of reason for this to be a Uigher revenge attack and both sides China and Thailand are players in that theory.

There were two targets in the bomb attack, China and guess who?

There were two countrys who hurt a lot of Uighurs.wai2.gif

This Theory is absolutely nuts.

Uighur have a problem with China, Not Thailand.

So what if they were deported from Thailand to China and persecuted there. You don't start another war with another country when you already have one going with one of the most powerful countries on Earth.

.

In what way is planting a bomb in Thailand assured of killing Chinese citizens?

Its a bomb, planted in a public place. How is the any guarantee of killing any Chinese..

So the riots at the Thai embasssy in Turkey did not happen after Thailand deported Uighurs to China.

The Uighurs were not angry that this resulted in some executions.

So the Uighurs were not angry at China for executing some of there kind, they did not smash the Thai embassy to bits in Turkey and they were not angry that Thailand Jaunta deprorted them to China to be executed and imprisoned.

The bomb was place at a shrine where Chinese worship not in Nana plaza.

The suspects are more than likely highly probably Uighurs.

Most international media including Reuters, Times, CNN , BBC, tout this as being a revenge attack against China and Thailand for the treatment handed out to them.

So go figure shill.

Its politically expedient for the current administration to find an international rather than domestic enemy.

The spin is already being put on the act as a personal rather than terrorist action.

News agencies have provided multiple theories, not just one, it seems you are spinning your own preference in that regard.

So go figure shill?

Not really sure that's meaning much to me.

I understand that the matter of competence is at the heart of much of this. I don't expect that the RTP will manage the information flow to the public effectively, there are just too many personalities involved and too little attention to detail. What I do not understand is why don't the authorities simply update the public on the status of the investigation providing known facts. Why would people in a position of authority constantly speculate and share these speculations with the public? The public needs to know that the suspects have been identified and that they have been rounded up and are off the streets. The rest of it needs to wait for either a confession or the judicial process.

Just a small DIPLOMATIC note:

When a foreign citizen is arrested by a government, it is a normal diplomatic procedure to allow the foreign embassy to contact their citizen. One of the most obvious reasons is to confirm the citizen is one of their nationals and other reasons relate to assure proper judicial treatment of the citizen.

Thai authorities have insisted that Emrah Davutog was a Turkish national. Yet, the junta has refused Turkey access to the alleged citizen(s), confirmation of nationality which could be aided by the Turkey embassy, and a proper judicial process defined by Thailand's criminal code.

The Prayut regime is committing a major diplomatic faux pas much in the same manner as it did with Myanmar over the Kao Toh murders.

But with 4 million Muslim-Thais in the South and 15 million Muslim-Malaysians to the west, Muslim Turkey may decide to take a more "personal" relationship with the Thai Buddhist Junta-led government. It will not be as complacent as the Myanmar Buddhist military dominated government. Turkish ire might accelerate should Prayut commit himself to further appeasement with China on further Uighurs being deported back to China.

If the PM's cabinet can be replaced for poor performance, the PM himself bears scrutiny.

I'm confused.

Because the passport is shown as being issued in Xianjiang, homeland of the Uighur, and the name on it is a Muslim one. Doesn't in anyway prove he's guilty but it fits the prevailing narrative. It's as near as you can get to a Uighur passport.

Thai police make a statement saying more info is needed to nail the persons responsible for a terror attack. (they try to calm everybody down to the allay fear by saying it is not a terror attack) Then the same anti Thai posters denigrate and introduce new conspiracy theories to try and humiliate Thai authorities. Some of you guys need to be held responsible for anti Thai comments. You cannot live here or you would not be so biased. So what agency or agenda are you working for?

Here we've got the ugly combination of arrogance and ignorance. You fit well in this combination.

What about the attack on the thai consulate in instanbul, where the attackers shout "allahuakbhar" while breaking into the building with stones and big wooden rods, throwing out the documents in the middle of the street...

Alas, it seems like 'Thai authorities' have a propension to humiliate theirselves in the the eyes of the international community, and this is, alas again, not at all a new or recent phenomenon... When local authorities would prove some true, recognisable, authority in the technical fields they're supposed to take care of for the Thai citizens' wellbeing, instead of navel-staring on the Thai microcosm (on the world's scale), these would not permanently navigate like drunken ships just to avoid their incury to be exposed with loss-of-face as consequence...

All IMO of course.

P.S.: No 'Thai-bashing', I'm in love with this country, and the vast majority of its good and simple (mostly not rich) citizens, but definitely not with those taking advantage of the land and the people.

Its good you preface your argument with an insult, because it tells the reader the argument lacks merit, its a ruse to suggest your statement has gravitas.

There is a long way between throwing stones in a riot and throwing pipe bombs in organised incidents of international terrorism.

FYI shouting ''Allah Akbar'' is not a terror act in itself its not much different from the insults you use in your argument- Its just so much hot air.

It means god is great and millions of Muslims use it every day to praise their god, without throwing a bomb or a stone before saying it.

Allah akba is no more related to terrorism than Jesus Lives. I was confronted in Perth recently by someone shouting Allah Ackba (that is what it sounded like) and I responded with Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. This seemed to unsettle this winker as he moved away and harassed others. I am not Christian in any form but it may assist you sometimes.
