Nomyai
Does anyone(night vendors) make money besides the landlord. Walked thru Sunday night @ 8pm. Didnt see many shoppers and its like that all the time. Same for the bars. 2 heavily clad old girls on stage shuffling. Its painful to see. MrTrip
My TW and I went there one evening maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Harassed by Indian/Pakistani men to go in bars and see sex shows. I found their behaviour quite offensive and have never returned. On the up side we bought a really nice bag for my wife for 300baht where the vendor started at 2400baht. He grabbed my hand (with the cigarette inside) for the hand shake, I squeezed his hand nicely.... IMA_FARANG
There was a time when Patpong was the place to go. Started going downhill about the time they put in that stupid market. There was a time when Patpong was the hot sex place with the best looking young women. Things change.

thaibeachlovers
Yes IMA. You are talking early to mid 80's. Try the 70s. That was when it was THE place for Bkk gogo scene. Early 90s I don't recall the night market, but by late 90s the bag shop invasion was well underway and the night market was full on. Loads of customers then. Pretty dangerous place back then too. Read a book that had story about a bar girl that set another girl's hair on fire for stealing her "boyfriend". Don't remember books name. I was on a tour from Singapore, and the guide warned me not to go there because I might get knifed. Didn't get to experience the place till early 90s, but it was pretty exciting then, though the couple that had sex on a m'bike had stopped before I got there. The upstairs bars had some pretty weird "shows" though, but the girls were too desperate for customers to buy drinks, so I didn't go much.

rgs2001uk
The tac sold there can be bought cheaper at any Big C/Tesco Lotus market for about one half of the price.
t8769
Every year the number of Western tourists goes down. The once mighty Western tourist, who used to populate Patpong and other areas, has a wallet that is getting thinner and thinner. It seems to me to be the decline and fall of Western economies. Europe sinks into irreversible decline, under the weight of debt, welfare and mass 3rd world immigration. Only Germany, the UK and a few other places are doing well. France is sinking fast, Spain and Italy are barely afloat and Greece survives on German insistence. America is not thriving as its experiment with European Welfare Socialism has brought debt and little prosperity. It is also suffering mass 3rd world immigration and all the joys that brings. Patpong used to be so packed it was hard to move, but the wealthy Westerners who used to crowd its streets are more likely to stay home. The 21st Century belongs to the tiger economies of Asia. Horseshit....most of us just know its rubbish. The band is sometimes fun and Madrid remains a good spot for a pizza and one or two good late bars. That's it...its days as a gogo place of note are long gone. Its a specialist niche market there now I believe hehehe...
DM07
There are still some nice places, but the atmosphere is horrible, when the place is empty like it is now on too many nights! I guess, many people by now learned what a rip- off the Nightmarket is and that you can get the same sh1t at MBK or JJ...and way cheaper! I am willing to bet, that there is no way back, because the vendors, taxi- and Tuk Tuk- drivers will never in a million years understand the concept of "word of mouth"! brewsterbudgen
Yes the market is to be avoided, but some of the bars are still going strong, particularly Madrid, Goldfingers and Safari(well, strong is maybe too strong!). However, soi 2 is buzzing these days with gogos like Electric Blue, The Strip, Bada Bing, Pink Panther and Black Pagoda. Well worth a visit if you want a change from Sukhumvit. t8769
Many closed stores on Soi 22 and Soi 24, haven't seen that in 30 years! Talked to locals who say trade is down, not so many customers as before. And that's not horseshit.

speedtripler
its a complete rip off now ,a tourist trap everything is overpriced and like mentioned you can buy the same junk elsewhere for half the price and not be harrassed by indian suit sellers
thaibeachlovers
Several factors at work. Western tourists don't have as much money as in the past and probably less likely to want to buy rubbish from overpriced stalls. The market and the blocked pavements are a turn off and people would probably prefer to go elsewhere less crowded. As the bag shops took over, the atmosphere became less welcoming for the customers. When you can go to Nana, why bother with Patpong? The word must be getting out that LOS is no longer the cheap paradise it once was.

Anyway, mongers are tourists and buy junk on holiday.
JayPhillips
I've never understood the appeal of this market in the middle of all the go-go bars. You see family’s walking around late at night with their children on holiday, It just doesn't seem right to me. If you’re looking to buy presents and souvenirs to take back home, you'll be better off visiting MBK. So many of the stalls at Pat Pong market are selling the same stuff, but double the price. At least at MBK many of the shops and stall have the prices labelled, so you don’t need to spend 20 minutes trying to haggle on the price. fey
Shopping at MBK and a night market like Patpong are just not the same, sorry. Tourists come for ambiance snd shopping at a real crowded sweaty asian market, not the mall they just left back home. The items are junk anywhere you get it. Patpong is more my scene then Sukhumvit or Nana will ever be. Something about the grit makes it seem more real and less 'Disneyland-like'. However I don't like getting overcharged or ripped off. Especially with strong arm tactics. That's a deal breaker so I dont goto the bars or gogo's there. Lucifer disco is an option. Still like the area though, too bad they let the Thai thugs ruin the area.

But you can probably find the same crap on sale cheaper in mbk, pratunam or Chinatown.... Patpong has history and reputation but that's about it... Don't know why anyone would shop there thesedays
