I don't see any van or camping van or RV so much in Thailand, maybe I have seen 2 camping vans in one year. probably owned by farangs.

what is the reason? is it dangerous to do camping in Thailand?

You can camp in National parks ,on designated sites .Its not so popular in Thailand as Hotels are cheap .Camper vans exist but are very expensive to buy or rent .I am not sure if wild camping is allowed ? ...but i know some get away with it in forests etc ,away from other people .

Rooms and food is cheap....Medium sized RV might get 7mpg on the flat....Narrow roads with no turn around areas along with high motorbike traffic make driving hard (typically you never take them anywhere you can't back out of or go straight through).....There are no camp grounds with hook ups - no infrastructure.....

A Thai can jump on his motorbike - drive to a park and rent a tent with bedding for about 200B a night or bring his tent and beach camp for 50-100B per night & food is plentiful....

On top of that....

A camper with no hook ups to run AC would be completely useless here.....

I regularly camp (in a tent) in isolated spots on the west coast. I have a handful of secret surf spots. It is great fun and I have had some great wilderness sex with my girlfriends. I have no idea who owns the land in the wilderness spots that I camp on, but no one has ever questioned me or challenged me.

On a recent trip, my girl and I chased and caught some grasshoppers, then I went fishing in a fresh water river and caught some nice big fish, then set up camp in a forest by an isolated beach (that has a killer righ hand wave breaking down a sand spit running out to an island. My girl started a fire while I attended to the tent. We then had fresh barbequed fish and salad for dinner, and mad sex under the stars for dessert. At dawn I got some fantastic waves.

Total cost. Nothing.

It would appear there is cmping the same as in the U s. Just not as much of it.

As for mobile homes and camper vans and trucks I wouldn't really call that camping.

I'm calling BS on that one.

Mine can. And most often just by walking in the room.

If you mean like Kenneth Williams, then yes. If you mean like itinerants, then not so much.

I disagree with this. Yesterday someone was kind enough to inform me that I'm a pikey.

But there's more -- apparently I'm a digital pikey.

When I have more time I'll come back and tell you about my exotic Thai-Chinese caravan.

Camping in the tropics you'll encounter insects and critters you won't find in temperate climates. Some of them are pretty nasty. More cautions, pre-cautions, etc.

Well, yeah, I knew this all along, then one night in my rented cabin in the boonies in Lao (no electricity) instead of just plopping into bed, where my bed sheets were still all bunched up from the night before, for some reason I turned on the torch and proceeded to shake out the sheets. And there it was, in my bed, a scorpion. Now that's whatchacall a wake-up call.

One of the things I don't like about the camper-van/motorhome thing, in any country, is someone with a badge can decide you are a threat of some sort and all your gear requires inspection.

If you use the search function there are numerous threads already discussing the thread title.

If you went to work and spoke to your mates about last nights game or the price of a loaf of bread and they waved you away saying "we have already spoken about that" would you think them rude ?

No I don't have friends at work only colleagues.

This isn't "last night's game" or some other current event. This is a static topic that hasn't changed in years or decades, and last year's numerous threads are still pretty valid.

The truth is that you'll often find 10x as much information using the search function as you'll get by starting a new thread.

It's not rude as much as helpful to suggest starting there.

Somebody who does regular wild camping in Thailand ,told me that he lights a fire outside his tent at night and that keeps away the nasty insects ,snakes etc .

In most places that's the theory...Some critters are drawn by light and warmth.....

How long is the longest a campfire has lasted for you ?????

A completely full Coleman lamp will burn 5-7 hours at best - propane a lot less....

Always heaps of mozzies in some locations other not so much. Depends on the nearby ground water. Just wash before dark (I have one of those black plastic solar shower things and I fill it from the 4 12THB white tanks I carry in the back of my truck) and then put your long pants and shirt on. Bang on a bit of mozzie cream and fire up a couple of coils. Job done. When camping, after dark the girl and I sometimes go spotlighting on the beach to catch the big crabs. They run like blazes and is a hilarious fun to catch them. Don't know what kind they are but they cook up fine in a pot on the fire with clean and sweet white meat.

If you go to Makro you will see that they sell small one burner camping stoves that use the hairspray sized can of propane. Cheap and work great. I have a sea kayak also and my girl loves to come with me to catch squid with jigs. Sometimes just a few, but we have some evenings where we have caught more than 50. My favourit camping meal is to fry up some fresh cut squid in a pot with some sliced onion and garlic and then add water and bring to a boil and add two of the large 90G Mamma Creamy Tom Yum noodles. While that lot is comming to the boil again, cut up some corriander and spring onions, slice some fresh cherry tomatoes, and squeeze some fresh lime juice and add all of that to two large bowls. When the noodles are boiling tip the noodles and soup half half into your bowls. Wash up your pots and bowls using sand from the beach and ocean water.

Enjoy.

That's very interesting, I used to go camping with a tent when I was back in Scotland, and at one time I had an old Volkswagen caravanette.

I have got to say that I don't fancy camping in Thailand, I do road trips on my motorbike, and stay in hotels.

Anyway, happy camping and take care.

I have ridden bikes and camped all over the word. I love it. I have some micro gas stoves and lanterns that I bought years ago. They are titanium alloy (i think) and were very expense at the time. But money well spent. I also have a highend superlight waterproof tent. I often go on camping trips with my girl on one of my bikes. A lot more freedom on a bike and you can get to some really hidden spots on the west coast, but the trade off is that you have to bath in a river or lake.

I am not broke, but too be honest I love camping and actually hate staying in hotels. What is better than sipping a cool drink with your girl while watching the bush television?

I should also add that my new girl is a gem. She is stunning and dresses up with the best of them (and yes she is tall and white skinned and often asked by Thais if she is Thai.) but she loves camping even more than me. She also loves the water and swimming. And what Thai doesn't like barbequeing? We have had some amazing summer days floating around a lake in the jungle on my kayak and then, when the mood took us having wild sex in the jungle along the shore. No doubt someone will be along shortly to call me a liar.

How does one pack a girl, gear, and an open sea ?kayak? on a bike.....They are open topped - hard plastic I believe (have a buddy that surfs with one) & and a bit large for some cars let alone a bike....

Thanks for your kind words. I left Phuket earlier this year mainly because of how dangerous the traffic had become. I had three accidents in the space of 9 months, not of them my fault, and the other driver fleeing the scene on all three occassions.

I have moved up into the Jungle and it is the best thing I have ever done.

My girl has a new easy job and is happy. We have a little herb and veggie garden and spend more of our time cooking great food.

I had a very sh!tty life when I was young so maybe I am getting a little return Karma. I hope so.
