Recent anti-plastic bag campaign reduced 1.8 million bags in one day

BANGKOK, 16 September 2015 (NNT) - The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion on Tuesday said the recent anti-plastic bag campaign held on September 15th effectively reduced the use of plastic bags by 1.8 million bags nationwide on the day.

The revelation was made after officials of the department visited department stores and convenience shops that are participating in the campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags initiated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and 16 other government units.

The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion said the government plans to hold the campaign on the 15th and 30th of each month, starting this month until the end of the year.

The department expects the campaign to be more and more successful with each sequential event. It hopes the campaign will help residents become less reliant on plastic bags overtime.

Where do they get these figures from? Absolutely no sign of any reduction in use in Khon Kaen yesterday. In fact, in Tesco Lotus, I, as usual, combined the contents of several plastic bags loaded by the checkout assistant, and returned the 3 unnecessary bags to her. She was quite miffed by this and put the returned bags under the counter!!!

In UK we pack our own bags and can return old bags to the store!

Two plastic bag free days in a month to be set

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion says Thai shoppers have helped to reduce the use of 1.78 million plastic bags when the country started the first plastic bag free day campaign on August 15.

The plastic bag free day was observed for the second day yesterday at all convenience stores, supermarkets and department stores.

Department’s deputy director-general Sermyos Somman said the plastic bag free day would be observed on the 15th of every month.

On August 15, the first time of the campaign, Thai shoppers have helped to reduce the use of 1.78 million plastic bags, or 0.3% of total plastic garbages.

From the survey of most stores, he said the people gave good cooperation in the campaign by bringing along with them cloth bags instead, or recycled their old plastic bags for use.

He said statistics by the department revealed that people used more than 7,000 tons of plastic bags and foams a day, 5,300 tons of which are plastic bags.

The successful observation of the campaign and good cooperation from the people will encourage the department to include one more day to the plastic bag free day on the 30th day of the month, in addition to the 15th day, he said.

He also said that the department was also contemplating of a bill to increase tax on plastic bag use to keep pace with international standards.

Well that's really great. If parents told their kids not to throw plastic bags out the window they might not do it themselves. In British Columbia

you had a choice at the grocery store to use your own bag, a brown paper bag or plastic bag. Hopefully people start refusing plastic bags and

use there own.

In my humble opinion,Thailand&Thais needs to learn, how to handle garbage.

If you don't know, how to handle litter/garbage,then you'll never have a clean country.

Every day,i'm embarresed,i see the litter/garbage in the nature, everywhere in Thailand.

When i drive in my car,i can often see; one side of the road is nice clean, but the other side of the road looks like a junkyard.

And it's not only for 10-20 meters,it's much much longer distances,i'm talking about.Mostly everywhere.

When i have asked gf,how this is possible, she answered: It's because one side of the road is privat property and the other side of the road if public property.

If that's true(and i believe it is) then guvermenet have a serious big responsebillity of the problem.

In beginning, she did not believed me,but when i've showed her pictures/videos of streets and nature in my country,to make her understand how clean a country can be,her eyes had same size as footballs. She asked me: Are these real pictures???I answered: yes,but i think, it could be better

I come from a country, where we've been told in childhood and in school:KEEP THE NATURE CLEAN".It's in our backbones.

I've learned that the planet earth,is not a heritage from our parents,it's something we have borrowed from our children.

It's simply not enough,to reduce production and distribution of plasticbags, foam and so on.

1/ It's also a key factor,to learn people,to keep the nature clean and how to do it.

2/ Recyclingsystem/recyclingsites,is a key factor as well.IT'S VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!

(Example: In my country, you have to pay 5-10thb for a plasticbag in a supermarket, that makes people remember to bring a bag or two, when they go shopping).

3/ Reducing the production of plastic and foam as well.

It's a combination of these 3 things.

Please keep in mind, that i only wish the best for Thailand.

About Making Thais understand, that they just can't throw litter/garbage on the ground and leave it there: WOW...that's a big one,coz many Thais, will feel they'll loose face, when you ask them,to clean up.

When i have workers,i always tell them before they begin: Clean up afterwards.I will simply pay them, before i'm satisfied.

Everytime i tell them that, they look on me,like i'm on drugs or from another planet.

When i explain to them, why i think like i do,few understand my way of thinking, but most of them are clearly annoyed/disappointed,that they need to do some work, without extra pay.

I remember a guy,who got very angry about it and i asked him politely and calm,if he was buddhist and he said yes. Then i roared into his face, that when he's borned again in 200-300 years from now, then he could see, what he had done, and to get the hell out of my property immidiately.

I often meet him,and when i do,i always smile. But he never smiles back.

But after all,he's the only person, that have been angry about it.

Yet i can see some huge challenges here.

Let's be honest:mountains of gargage,doesn't attrack more tourist,at least i don't think so.

That's just my own personally opinion :-)

The campain should be; 24/7

KEEP THE NATURE CLEAN,PLEASE!

And please tell you kids and friends,to keep the nature clean.

I wish you all a very good day

In Wales u have to pay for them. Just keep half a dozen bags in the boot of the car.

2/ Recyclingsystem/recyclingsites,is a key factor as well.IT'S VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Recycling is very alive in Thailand. Everywhere I go I see people on modified motorbikes, bicycles or push carts collecting recyclables. The guys who come and collect our rubbish rip open every bag and extract the recyclables. There are numerous depots quite close to our moo baan that purchase recyclables.

That's because they can make money with it. Stuff they can sell , they pick up, if they cannot sell, it is left on the ground.

England has just imposed a 5p tac per bag, bringing it in line with Wales and Scotland. Personally I have been using the "bag for life" for years now. You buy a good quality plastic bag in the supermarket for 12p, lasts for months, then when it's knackered the store swap it for free.

ALDI's is similar in Australia. Once you've paid for your goods, it's up to you how to pack them and get them home.

You soon learn to bring a few cotton bags. Hardware stores let you choose an empty carton to pack things in.

MAKRO is the same. I help myself to an empty carton or two.

5300 tonns of plastic bags a day?

At an average of 4 grams per bag that would be well over a billion bags used and tossed a day or about 16 bags per person a day.

I would be skeptical of the numbers, if not for the fact that every time my wife goes and gets a ready made meal for her and her and her mom , there is between 16 and 20 bags of various sizes that make up the complete meals.

I recently bought a large plastic storage box and a few other things in Do Home. I tried to get them to put all the things in the storage box to save bags but they refused saying "security, not allowed". So they put all the things into plastic bags and then put it all in the storage box. They then taped another small bag onto the storage box as well. I am surprised they didn't put my change in another bag and receipt in another. They also will not allow you to bring your own bags in with you. This shop seriously needs an education implant.

I also agree with you on every point. Thai people dont seem to mind the mess so much. I walked past a long line of roadside eating areas this morning where the stink from waste food bins on the road filled the air. People sat eating but without any sign of concern of the rotting food stench wafting through them. I had to hold my breath to save making a mess myself.

Just make plastic bags illegal as we have it in South Australia. If u want a bag, reusable that is, you have to buy it. It becomes second nature to bring your own bag.

When we built our house in Sisaket, it took me days to clean up all the staff the builders had thrown on the sides. And I still clean up after family members when I am there and they are at our house. Yes, they laugh and probably think hat I am crazy. My wife agrees with me but she is too scared to tell them to keep the place clean. So, I just clean up and shut up. Will they ever change? I doubt it.
