Health bodies push for new law on tobacco

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- Six key public health organisations and allies yesterday vowed to support the new draft of the Tobacco Control Act and called on the government and the National Legislative Assembly to push this law through to protect children and youth.

They also called on the lawmakers to see through the excuses and twisted facts allegedly provided by tobacco companies and not let them interfere in the legislation procedure.

At an academic conference in Chiang Mai province, the group also said that their campaign, via www.vote4tobaccolaw.com, had won more than 12 million signatures as of Tuesday, and their target for 15 million signatures would easily be achieved when the law deliberation is completed in six months.

The organisations behind the campaign include the Thai Public Health Club, the Mohanamai Network Foundation and the Health Professional Association of Thailand.

In BKK most kids are very fat, they only sit on the butt all day and play with computers. Also they won't eat any vegy at all. Better work on that first.

Also the trucks/buses pollute air a lot, when we lived along a main road we had to mop the floor every other day or have black feetsoles.

So they will make cigarettes more expensive now? What about the Thai tobacco for 10 baht a pack?

Is that supposed to be reporting?

What is the new law all these organisations are supporting? Plain packaging? Increase in taxes to help cover the cost of smoking related diseases? Ban on smoking indoors? Age limit for the purchase of cigarettes?

That wasn't a news article, it was a space filling exercise.

How many people will be unemployed by these new laws? The only producer of cigarettes in Thailand is the Government. If the taxes are increased, then the organized crime families will have them smuggled in and sold on the black market. How many fishing boats will be used in the smuggling industry? This number will double and these health do goobers will make the Mafia richer.

Why has it become normal for everyone to decide what another individual can do?

It's called liberalism. (Well, you could call it socialism, too.) See, the "individual" just doesn't figure in things anymore. Now it's all about the "social good". We need Big Brother and the nanny state for that.

But when it comes to the personal arrogance and total lack of consideration of so many tobacco users, I must admit, I'm inclined to just smile when Big Brother gets off his leash...
