Groupon Thailand shuts down, company cuts jobs globally

PHUKET: -- Construction workers at Supalai Lagoon in Koh Kaew dropped their tools when they spotted a gigantic waterspout off the east coast of Phuket this morning (Sept 23).

Min of Finance urges people to save money

BANGKOK, 23 September 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Finance has stressed the need for the general public to start saving their money, as the country is on the threshold of an aging society.


Deputy Finance Minister Wisudhi Srisuphan said that more savings would enable Thais to become self reliant in their retirement and ease the burden on the state's social services.

According to Mr. Wisudhi, the government allocates 300 billion baht, or two percent of the country’s GDP, on the Government Pension Fund. The fund is expected to reach 800 billion baht in the next ten years, by which time the country is predicted to become an aging society.

The Deputy Finance Minister revealed that the government was developing a new savings programs in addition to the Social Security Fund, to ensure financial stability for itself and the elderly population.

Villages in Nan flooded by flash floods

NAM: -- Several villages in Muang and Phu Wiang districts of Nan province are submerged Wednesday by flash flood after heavy rains lashed the province throughout the night.

The Haed creek overflowed its banks and inundated several villages. In Ban Dongsak, Tambon Fai Kaew, five houses were flooded with mud prompting resuce workers to be sent in for help.

Governor Anukrit Poengsopha ordered officials to survey damages caused to properties and to dispatch relief materials to help flood victims.

Meanwhile, people living along river and creeks were warned to move their valuables to higher ground and to closely monitor weather reports.

In Ban Sang district of Prachin Buri, water in the Prachin Buri river and tributaries are steadily rising as residents were warned to keep abreast of weather reports.

Meteorological Department, meanwhile, predicted rains and heavy rains in the northern and northeastern regions during September 26-29 as a result of monsoon.

Gov to spend up to 2.5 billion baht to aid SME sector

BANGKOK, 23 September 2015 (NNT) - The government is expected to spend up to 2.5 billion baht to assist small to medium enterprises (SME).


Industry Minister Atchaka Sibunruang gave out awards during the SME Thailand Inno Awards 2015 to business with innovative and exceptional products.

She revealed that the government’s policy towards SMEs will focus on strengthening businesses and reducing principal costs. The government is in the process of finalizing each ministry’s assistance policy and is expected to spend up to 2.5 billion baht in aid measures for over 60,000 SMEs.

Warrants issued for arrest of two skull thieves

UDON THANI: -- The Udon Thani Provincial Court Wednesday approved arrest warrants for two shamans who allegedly stole a skull from a graveyard for amulet making.

"We will track them down," Udon Thani Police Station's superintendent Pol Colonel Wit Muttasin said, "Their crime has emotionally devastated the victim's family".

Wanted in this case are Narong Phumphuchit and Arthit Kongkarian, both 35. Being natives of the Udon Thani province, they have now gone into hiding.

Their accomplice, Bangorn Srinanam, was arrested on September 15.

Customs seize 7 million baht worth of contraband from parcels and air freights

Foreign Ministry briefs foreign diplomats about Erawan blast case

BANGKOK: -- The Foreign Ministry and the police spokesman Wednesday briefed diplomats from 56 countries and representatives of seven international organisations on the latest development of the Erawan blast case.

The 30-minute briefing was done by Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee and police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri.

Sek said the diplomats were happy that Thailand had stepped security for foreign tourists.

GI market still bustling with visitors on its last day despite rain

BANGKOK, 23 September 2015 (NNT) – The Commerce Ministry’s GI Products Fair held at Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem Market still attracts people particularly civil servants working near the Government House, on the last day of the five-day fair despite the showering rain.


Under the concept “Thrilled with GI Products, Enchanted with Community Identities”, the fair features a wide range of creative-economy products registered with Geographical Indication (GI). The Ministry of Commerce has selected GI products from eastern and southern Thailand as highlights of this week.

One of the successful products at the fair is mineral water from Ranong Province which has drawn great attention from women who care about their skin health.

Visitors also have chances to get consultancy on business and enjoy a photo competition in which the winner will get free air tickets to a domestic destination of their choice.

There are also "Cultural Street" where foodshops from the East and the South offer their signature dishes amidst cultural and musical performances by local artists as well as well-known national artists. All of these activities are available for visitors until 7 p.m. daily.

NLA holds seminar on education reform to combat corruption

BANGKOK, 23 September 2015 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has held an public forum at Bangkokthonburi University on education as a way of combating corruption.


NLA Vice President Peerasak Porchit chaired the event, saying the current political situation is ripe for enacting true reform measures in the form of government policies, as well as new laws to be passed by the legislature.

Tuang Antachai, chairman of the NLA’s committee on education and sports, said the Prime Minister places great importance on the prevention and elimination of corruption. He added that the NLA believes education reform is a crucial element to combating corruption.

Commerce Ministry to hold 7th rice auction dur Sep 28-29

BANGKOK, 23 September 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce is to release nearly 463,000 tonnes of rice kept in the government’s stockpiles for auction, revealed Director General of the Foreign Trade Department Duangporn Rodphaya.


The auction, the seventh of its kind this year, includes 5% white rice, 100% Hom Mali Fragrant Rice - Class B and White Broken Rice A.1 Super from the Public Warehouse Organization (PWO) and the Marketing Organization for Farmers (MOF).

Interested bidders are invited to submit their qualification documents to the ministry on Sep 28 from 9.30 a.m. - 11.30 a.m. Names of qualified bidders will be announced on the next day at 9.30 a.m. and they can submit their price offer on that day during 9.30 to 11.30 a.m.

Bids will be opened on the same day at 11.30 a.m. onwards. The ministry expects the auction will attract a lot of interest from private bidders.

Pattani woman restaurateur prevents bomb attack

PATTANI: -- A 60-year-old woman cleared a bomb from out of her restaurant in Pattani's Yaring district on Tuesday night. The bomb went off later without causing any casualties.

Pannee Rattanachinda noticed a suspicious box under a table inside her Saithong Restaurant after two men dropped by without buying anything.

After opening the box Pannee found what looked like explosives inside. She rushed it out to a pile of sand in front of her restaurant.

The bomb went off half an hour later without any casualties. A few minutes later another blast occurred nearby, but nobody was hurt.

Bangkok Bombers Not Arrested in Malaysia, Deputy Police Chief Rules
