Finding a urologist

Hello,

I am in need of finding a urologist in either Sisaket or Ubon. I live 40km west of Sisaket and 110km west of Ubon. I have tried to find a urologist, and even called some hospitals, but they don't seem to know what I'm talking about, or don't speak English.

Has anyone had any experience that they could pass on?

Thanks

Saphasit Hospital Ubon has a urology section; I had a biopsy (painless) there recently.

You need a Thai speaker; although I have always found all staff extremely helpful, it really needs a Thai to guide you around the complex.

The place is always packed, it takes a while to be dealt with, and the system looks chaotic, but it works.

They have recently opened an International section; you could check that, although I had good and inexpensive treatment in the public hospital.

I don't know Srisaket at all, but should imagine that their main hospital would also have a urology section.

Good luck.

I have been and remain under the care of the senior urologist at the large Government General Hosital in Surin since the beginning of this year. It started with an emergency admission to the hospital in February followed by a cystocopy and removal of a tumour (bladder cancer). Due to the world wide shortage of the BCG vaccine the hospital was unable to provide the follow-on course to treat and eliminate the cancer. I found one hospital in Bangkok that could complete the 6-week BCG course and duly attended and completed the treatment. I have had two subsequent cystocopies at 3-monthly intervals in Surin and I am pleased to say I have been given 'No evidence of disease' on both occasions. I am due for my next 3-monthly examination in November.

Surin is about 50 kilometers west of your location (by the sounds of it). The hospital is first class with new operating theatres that only opened this year. The senior urologist certainly knows his stuff and I have nothing but praise for his professionalism. The only downside is the lack of parking and throngs of people milling around everywhere. However, once you have had your first consultation the appointment system works very well and the waiting time to see the doctor is minimised. The best time to see the doctor (urologist) is 14:00 on Thursdays and Fridays although you will need to check-in before 13:00 to register, etc. Make sure you ask to see the Head of the Department (Urology) as there are several urologists on duty. The costs are relatively low for a consultation (less than 200 Baht) and even a cystocopy in the operating theatre is only 2,000 Baht. The doctors do speak and understand English although for your consultation I would recommend the services of a Thai interpreter, e.g. your wife or girlfriend. On both occasions for the follow-up cystocopies I was booked for a 09:00 in the operating theatre and, believe it or not, on both occasions I was on the table and ready to go at 09:00. The Urologist also lets you see what is happening on the new colour monitor. Excellent!

If you require the name of the urologist or further details please drop me a pm.
