September 25, 201510 yr Thailand voted chairman of Group of 77 in 2016SUPALAK GANJANAKHUNDEETHE NATION, NEW YORK NEW YORK: -- KINGDOM AIMS TO PROMOTE SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION AS WELL AS BE A LINK BETWEEN DEVELOPED AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIESTHAILAND yesterday won the 2016 chairmanship of the Group of 77, the largest intergovernmental organisation for developing countries at the United Nations and will push forward new development goals during it tenure, said a senior Thai diplomat. With the chairmanship, Thailand will play a crucial role in implementing sustainable development goals, which will be adopted during the Sustainable Development Summit 2015 in the next three days, said Ambassador to Paris Apichart Chinwanno.Apichart, who will become the Foreign Ministry permanent secretary next month, led the Thai delegation to the meeting of the Group of 77 at the UN headquarters in New York yesterday.Established in June 1964, the Group of 77 provides the means for its members to articulate and promote their |collective interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international issues within the UN system.Thailand aims not only to play a role in promoting South-South cooperation among developing countries but will also coordinate and be a link between developed and developing countries, Apichart said."We have experience and good practice in promoting sustainable development and many files such as the universal healthcare programme, disease outbreak control and disaster risk reduction," he said.Being the Group of 77 chair will give Thailand a chance to have a greater role in international forums and help promote the country's status in the international community, he said."If we can perform well in this forum, the performance will help to boost the chances for the country to have more roles in many other functions in the UN system," he said. Thailand will now campaign to have a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2017-18 term.A delegation led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will do make the case during the UN development summit and the 70th session of the UN General Assembly next week.Thailand's permanent representative to the United Nations, Virachai Plasai, who will chair the Group of 77 at the UN in New York, said the Kingdom would not encourage developing countries to confront developed countries."All countries have to change. September 25, 201510 yr I look forward to the progress of "implementing sustainable development goals". But what does this mean ? It means all the stuff you read on TV , wants to be, aims to be , will be in 10 years, plans to be the hub of.... Just expanded to include a bunch of other hopeless non developing cesspits.
September 26, 201510 yr I look forward to the progress of "implementing sustainable development goals". But what does this mean ? There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be completed in the coming 15 years, though more like a wish list. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/26/world/breakdown-of-un-sustainable-development-goals.html?_r=0 Just one line item "sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" will require an estimated infrastructure investment of around US$300 billion. Many funding countries have already failed to commit sufficient funding over the period which is estimated to total in the trillions p.a.
September 26, 201510 yr I wonder who the other 76 basket case countries are, to elect Thailand as their leader?
September 26, 201510 yr It was an UNCONTESTED election. No one else had applied for the position! So, in reality, Thailand didn't win shit!

September 26, 201510 yr It was an UNCONTESTED election. No one else had applied for the position! So, in reality, Thailand didn't win shit! Somewhat like when Saddam Hussein ran for re-election in 2001 or whenever it was.
September 26, 201510 yr "the US has an economic-development gap like many developing countries" - Prayut REALLY?
September 26, 201510 yr It was an UNCONTESTED election. No one else had applied for the position! So, in reality, Thailand didn't win shit! Ah diddums, a little sour grapes. Somewhat belies all those rosy tinted posters who maintain no one will have anything to do with the current Thai government. No country stood up and said what about democracy or those nice formerly elected Shin family PM dynasty then?
September 26, 201510 yr Must be a great group to have Thailand as its head considering export declines 5%, GDP 2.7% (officially but we know there's a contraction) and a military government unable to fix an economy in a downward spiral. Yep definitely want Thailand to head the group...[emoji15]
September 26, 201510 yr "the US has an economic-development gap like many developing countries" - Prayut REALLY? He actually has a good point here. Just google Gini index US and let your imagination do the rest.
