Min of Commerce to regulate dual-use goods exports

BANGKOK, 3 October 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce has issued a list of dual-use goods for which distributors or exporters will need to acquire registration and export permits.

The move came after a resolution of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) calling on member nations to formulate their own measures to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and weapon-making materials.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn disclosed that the Department of Foreign Trade has been directed to work out regulations for dual-use export. The Ministry of Commerce has announced a list of 1,230 products that are normally used for civil purposes but also have military applications. Such items include electronic equipment, plastic, and machinery.

Mrs. Apiradi said the control system for dual-use items would prevent Thailand encountering non-tariff trade barriers in other countries. The measure is expected to come into effect in 2018.

Condoms can be used as balloons. Balloons have the potential to deliver weapons.

Just another bureaucratic kneejerk...was it the aluminium tubes that the US stuffed up intelligence over that has brought this about?

Meanwhile ALL the permanent members of the UNSC continue to export REAL weapons to diverse terrorist organisations..We can make billions of dollars,in things that kill thousands of people, but everyone else should put restrictions on cell phones because a single nutter terrorist might blow himself up with it.

Excellent news!

Reputable sources report that pilots planning strike missions in Syria use dual-use ball point pens to take notes and fill out pre-flight forms using dual-use paper. It is further alleged they debrief these missions on dual-use whiteboards, and sit in dual-use chairs while drinking dual-use coffee.

Just a few examples of flagrant and outrageous abuse.

Putting a stop to the epidemic of dual-use proliferation is an important step in making the world safer.

Good to know the Ministry of Commerce is solidly on board.
