NEW YORK — Muslim rights activists have filed a lawsuit in the United States against Myanmar President Thein Sein, accusing him and several ministers of human rights abuses against minority Rohingyas, just a few weeks before an historic general election.

The complaint filed on Thursday in Manhattan federal court accused Thein Sein and top officials of planning and instigating "hate crimes and discrimination amounting to genocide."

According to the plaintiffs, Muslim Rohingya are "subjected to genocide, torture, arbitrary detention, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" by officials controlled by Thein Sein and his ministers.

Myanmar's government spokesman was not immediately available for comment, and did not respond to emailed requests.

The civil lawsuit was filed by Burma Task Force, a group of 19 Muslim organizations, and the Rohingya man Hitay Lwin Oo.

It seeks compensatory and punitive damages for alleged violations of the Alien Tort Statute (ATS), a U.S. law often invoked in lawsuits alleging human rights abuses.

Yes there is....go back to Bangladesh.

What a pack of idiots, what do they hope to achieve with this? Myanmar won't care one bit.

How about suing ISIS in the US? Or sue the plaintiffs in this case on their behalf.

Stay strong Myanmar...you will need to be...the muslim threat will increase....stay strong or the SEA culture will surely fall.

Mudcrab, I don't know where you come from or what religion are you, if seems either you have been raised without parents or family or just another hooligan who happened to be a member of this site. There are a lot of people everywhere in the world who came from different countries and have all the rights and some being president of the most strongest nation in the world, an example of Obama. Are you against Muslims or you just have hatred against religious belief of the other people. I doubt if you know anything about Christianity. I am sure you don't belong to the country where you have been born or living. You talk about ISIS, poor you, don't even know what is ISIS and how it was created, for your information they are not Muslims, and have no place in Islam, you dummy, ask those who have knowledge of ISIS or ISIL and will tell you they are bastards who have been created by CIA of US, and Mossad of Israel.

It is about time someone takes the Myanmar leadership to task for the treatment of the Rohingya...

There has to be a better solution to the problem with these people...

using Thai logic....if they wern't there it wouldn't happen. ,....which is fair enough as they shoudn't have left Bangladesh or other Muslim areas as Mujahadeen to enter Burma to try and overthrow the Burmese Government when Britain moved out . Instead of wasting funds on legal expenses in America, the money would be better spent on buying tickets for them to travel to Saudi Arabia or some other Muslim Nation.

The Rohighya people (originally Mujahedeen) had no problem killing innocent people when they tried to overthrow the Burmese Government so what was the question again ??

The history is a lot more complex than you have posted and covers centuries. However, the Muslim insurgency after WW11 was an attempt to integrate with East Pakistan (request rejected by East Pakistan) or to establish their own autonomous region. Armed insurgency membership was fairly small & the insurgency threat was basically non-existent by the early 1960s.

In the late 1970's Pakistan and Saudi Arabia accepted hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who at that time held Burmese citizenship.

Do you hold the same views for the non-Muslim ethnic groups in Myanmar who for decades have been suppressed by the various Myanmar governments?

Getting back to the topic, US Alien Tort Statute was successfully utilised by Burmese villagers against Unocal. I would guess that the current lawsuit purpose is for highlighting Rohingya problems on the international stage. Also possibly to try & freeze the international assets or otherwise cause problems for some members of the current government.
