My maths is correct. You are missing the overhead of each junction...

Why I said us is faster than speed of light but Europe not necessarily.

But faster than practical limits indeed unless you have a direct cable.

40ms is about speed of light. 80ms round trip ie ping (London). 100ms unfeasible.

What distance are you basing those calculations on?

Ah looks like Google gave me driving distance not crow flies! Still 60ms at 6k miles through a direct billion dollar cable... Rest of points still valid and 100ms not going to happen on any internet line here no matter how fast or expensive.

Typically 10ms (round trip) per junction, plus distance latency and 4 hops barely leaves the country.

Low 200s to UK is great, 400+ very slow.

Question to the OP, how much do you pay now for fiber, and is do you think its really worth the upgrade,im with TOT on cable out in the village 50k from mueng Lampang and have no problem with streaming movies in hd or youtube in hd, but torrent downloads via vpn are slow, i pay 640 baht a month including taxes, is it really worth while upgrading?

Torrents over your VPN will be slow regardless what access you use. Speed depends on the VPN and the connection to that (assuming it is not in Thailand).

*your added* :)

Which does not equate to torrents being slow on VPN. A good VPN will have a good speed.

Don't forget not all international connections are on fiber. Some are still on copper. If you are connecting to another location and the signal has to travel on copper, the pings times will probably double compared to a fiber connection all the way.

LOL, there is no copper anywhere than perhaps your last mile telephone cable for DSL.

Has all been stolen... biggrin.png

I had TOT adsl.. I think 15Mbit ?? I could never reliably stream with that.. Sure it would work sometimes but I hate buffering when watching a show or movie and netflix HD iPlayer HD etc etc was always a bit hit and miss. As it was 100% reliable it just didnt appeal to me.

I now have 3BB fiber 30/3 (tho always seem to get 35) and now everything works rock solid..

Sorry, I have to disagree, Worked in communications industry for 25 years. There are still many connections in the world that are not on fiber.
