What a retarded thing to say. My body, I can smoke, My body, I can drive drunk, my body, I can snort coke. Who picks up the hospital tab for your free will? You can choose free will when you pay the risk tax associated from it. Pay the tax get the benefit from it. zzo
I have a friend who was raised in a Thai village. She is about 50 years old. She said when she was a growing up, her mother stir fried with water, no oil. They had no sugar. Both were too expensive. Any wonder the young Thais are getting so fat? Soutpeel
Soda has sugar? They're called soft drinks. I think there is confused terminology....what the rest of the world refers to as soft drinks is referred to as "soda" by the USers

mogandave
Another hideously regressive tax, I'm shocked. I submit that if Thais are getting fatter, it has more to do with increased income than soft drinks. If you rich lefties don't like it, don't drink it, but why do you want to punish the poor? You get to eat and drink what you like, why can't everyone else?

Actually you have also a different effect...very clear on Alcohol tax. Only the rich can drink the good (also good quality and less harmful) wine, while the poor masses must drink the unhealthy homemade lao kao. Actually the socialist countries weren't that socialist...they restricted the population in many ways but let them freedom on what the drink and eat.... Lol. Free to drink & eat what they like, IF they can find it on the shelves and are willing to wait in line for it. Anywhere else, including Kalifornia, it's pretty blatant socialism, but in Thailand, it's just rank opportunism. Where do you REALLY think the money will end up? And, BTW, in a country where they'll go in debt to buy the latest cellphone or motorbike, or shiny new BMW with the rent money, does anyone REALLY think a tax like this will have any impact on obesity?? As far as tourism is concerned, one more nail in the coffin. Once governments catch the tax bug, it's all downhill. Anything can be taxed, and eventually is, then taxed some more, then taxed again. Taxed when you make it; taxed again when you spend it; and if there's anything left, taxed again when you die. So says Karl Marx I guess.

malt25
"It's known that Thailand follows the US (particularly California) on many consumer health trends (smoking bans, handicapped parking, banning plastic bags, etc)". What ? Never seen a handicapped car park here and the plastic bag usage is off the charts. 20150529_162540.jpgWell → you can scratch one off your list.....This is a local Makro + the Big C's also have clearly marked dissabled parking along with a few banks..... Never seen one of them so can only assume they are isolated in their usage so no point in scratching it from my list just yet. "Never seen one of them so can only assume they are isolated in their usage so no point in scratching it from my list just yet." Start scratching ol mate. You obviously don't get out much. Sakon Nakhon, relatively small city, have lots of handicapped parking signs. I recently drove to BKK & return & encountered several car parks with designated handicap parking. Cheers..... Mal. juice777
Funny I just found this Thread I was just trying to find out how much sugar if any is in a bottle of Thai soda, dose anyone know? When it comes to tax on unhealthy food I have a mix opioin, there is 9 tea spoons of sugar in a can of coke that can't be good, but will a tax stop people drinking it, we'll I just read in Mexico it did by 10%, but what are the government going to do with the money are they going to help people who are suffering from illness bought on my sugur I doubt it, Looks like they are going to have one in the UK soon, but as someone pointed out if you put the price of coke up then people might just drink the cheap stuff what has more sugur in it!!! Also in the UK they are talking about a tax on junk food, OK then put the price of healthy food down, it cost a fortune to eat healthy in the UK why you think so many families on low income eat chicken and chips 2 pound and you ant got to cook it and it taste so good, but I do see kids eating it on the way home from school and at lunch time, and then maybe they have it for dinner to So maybe a government campaign is better
mogandave
If you think people shouldn't drink it, grow some hair on your a$$ and make it illegal, otherwise, let it go.
juice777
I sort of agree with you but when I was growing up it was a treat, now kids have it all the time, and I am by the time they are old enough to understand they have a taste for it, sugar is like a drug for some people, so I think a government campaign is better, actually I think they should start on the breakfast cereals first Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

hawker9000
It's just amazing how many in the crowd just don't get it. It's never - NEVER - about obesity in kids, new security at the airport, disincentivizing alcohol use, or any of the koolaid dispensed by govts to a naive, unquestioning public. Once govts discover how easy it is to get their hands into people's pockets, taxes proliferate like mice in a grain silo. Any excuse will do. The sheeple suck it up.
