PM Prayut: There is no conflict within Thai Royal Army

BANGKOK, 13 October 2015 (NNT) - The Prime Minister has denied reports that there have been conflicts within the Royal Thai Army.

Spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office Maj. Gen. Sunsern Kaewkumnerd said that Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has made it clear and again confirmed that the situation in the army is normal and all officers are still united.

He said the PM is hoping to get cooperation from members of the press in stopping reports about conflicts in the army because there is no truth behind them.

Concerning the charter drafting, Maj. Gen. Sunsern said that the PM had assured him that the drafting process will always maintain the people’s interests as the priority.

The PM’s Office spokesman added that Gen. Prayut has urged Thais to stay vigilant. and alert security officers when something suspicious is found, while imploring the country to have trust and cooperate to minimize internal conflicts.

Interesting story in The Post last week suggests otherwise.

The report indicted that the new army chief overturned a last minute promotion and a posting authorised by his predecessor and cancelled some projects he had put in place.

Once again it's suggested that the army is split into two main factions based on loyalty / association with various ex and currently serving officers and no matter what the PM says he knows all about cliques within the military and what they get up to.

I would imagine that some in the army are still leaning towards the Reds as they have in the past. Only a fool would think otherwise.

As always, it's the timing of these things that are always interesting ... lots of things going on at the moment, some publicized, some not ...

Well you could be quite right, Just think how many young poor sons of farmers that can't afford the pay off the right people to get their son's name off the list to be drafted?

and wear do most of Thailand's poor sons come from? So most of those sons will share the same views as their parents maybe.

I think it rather the same situation as the BIB they will have a section of them that is inclined to have a loyalty to certain factions.

The thing is that the PM is coming out and declaring that there is no conflict speaks volumes.

I believe there may be a problem there. But what can come of it? If there was a counter coup, would it have to be a violent coup? How could power be taken from a military government without a fight? Seems impossible to me.

I did not know there was conflict in the military between two factions. Now it has been denied

I am quite sure there is some kind of conflict. blink.png

There is, and has been for a long time, a conflict between those of the "Eastern Tigers" and other elements of the military. Rumors (and that's all they are at this point), that I'm hearing is that there is definitely "trouble in the ranks", and that it slowly starting to simmer. We'll see.

Only two? Anyone with more than abpassing interest in Thai affairsvwill know that is an underestimate..... Who they are and who is in which clique is common knowledge to most Thais.... But naming names is inbadmissable.

Then of course there's the simpleton expat theory of red and yellow.....

Prayut needs to understand that "leaders" of his ilk have a very limited use-by date (just like milk) . Both turn sour very quickly. Recent examples include Hosni Mubarak, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussain.

If you don't have the undivided support of the army then you better examine your options for the future!

Are you certain the army are undivided?

Mubarak 30 years in power.

Gaddafi 42 years in power.

Hussain 24 years in power.

Seems Prayuth has a long time yet.
