Financial assistance to relieve troubles of fishermen from fishing ban

BANGKOK: -- In the bid to help relieve the trouble of the fishermen whose vessels have been stranded on shores due to stringent measures imposed to clamp down illegal fishing by the government, the cabinet yesterday endorsed the spending of 227 million baht budget to help them.

Under the assistance programme, owners of fishing vessels who have suspended their offshore fishing after the government began clamping down on illegal fishing since July 1, will be compensated in accordance with the size of their vessels.

Owners of fishing vessels of 10 gross ton will each receive a financial support worth 2,100 baht a day while those who own fishing vessels of 10-30 gross ton will get 2,900 baht a day.

Owners of boats equipped with stow net will each receive a financial support of 1,000 baht a day.

The government’s clampdown on illegal fishing follows a ‘yellow card’ warning issued by the European Union (EU) on April 21.

Thailand could face a red card notice that means a ban on the Thai seafood export if the fishing situation does not improve within this month.

This is total B.S. This jerks fished ILLEGALLY for years, and knew it. But now that they can't fish illegally, they want "compensation" from the government.

And the IGNORANT government is going to give it to them!

I've heard of reparations for slavery but what's the word when the slave master gets money because he can't use his slaves? Ridiculous.

WHAT?? Reward these criminals for breaking the law? Preposterious! Ludicrous!! (Ridiculous has already been used in a previous post). Someone should investigate if those government officials who endorsed the compensation have vested interests in these illegal fishing fleets. But they might want to publish those findings annonymously lest they risk being treated like that Reuter's journalist.

one has to wonder how many ministers have ownership or are involved in these boats to pas this bullsh*t deal, these people were doing it illegally but they are going to be compensated instead of locked up and fined like they should be. Has to have effected someones income and they have made sure they dont lose to much, total crap.

It's absolutely ridiculous to give them any money! For what? To sanction illegal fishing all over the years??

hmmmh, looks as if somebody tries to buy some votes for the next election???

Can someone sue Prayut personally to recover 227 million baht in public funds being spent for boat owners NOT fishing? It's not like the government is paying higher than market price for fish as a form of populist subsidy.

The fishing crews meanwhile go without any income during the boat owners' shutdown. Go find another job - that's not Prayut's problem. But boat owners as do rubber plantation owners have POLITICAL influence.

“stranded on shores due to stringent measures imposed to clamp down illegal fishing”

What about the poor farmers who are unable to plant their dry-season rice crops? Yet another slap in the face for them! These guys (the farmers) are trying to make an honest living (nothing illegal), and the government is saying "Don't plant", and, "We've got no money for you".

Now the government is going to assist people who are (by their defiant actions) simply not willing to make the effort to comply with the country’s obligations to clean up the illegal fishing practices.

There had better be some stringent measures imposed on the fishermen (by the government) before they get their reward!

Stop this madness!! Stop destruction of mangrove forest and marine ecosystems, stop slavery.

Good decision from government to keep them away from fishing,

but also we westerners are guilty, WHY WE IMPORT THAI MARINE PRODUCTS?

Illegal fishing along with slavery exists because western supermarkets will buy the cheapest thing that will make them the most profit ... Until someone brings it into the spotlight and then they are forced to protect their own image by doing something
