Anyone using the free version of opensubtitles media player?

As the title says, is there anyone out there who is using this media player successfully?

I won't bore you all with a long post on the problems I'm experiencing until I know if there is someone who can advise me.

It would be a wonderful little piece of software if I could get it to work properly….

Before you provide me with 'help' links and tutorials, I have tried them all, to no avail, and judging by comments on YouTube I am not the only one.

I think there is a fault in the software, but before I dump it, I just thought I'd ask.

Anyone?

Thanks

Why use that one if I may ask.

I use VLC and that one can handle anything you throw at it and most importantly No Problems what so ever.

I have GOM, VLC and Windows Media Player, and use all of them for different purposes, but GOM is my default player of choice, although I agree VLC is equally as good. I just find the ease of changing GOM to full screen, and inserting the sub-tiles is slightly more user-friendly on GOM than VLC - otherwise no difference.

As far as the 'opensubtitles' player is concerned - the clue is in the title. It really is a magical piece of work and can download the subtitles automatically for almost any film or TV programme in a matter of seconds and display them on your screen, at any size and colour your choose. All you do is hit a single button and it finds them for you.

When it works, it is brilliant, and the player itself is no slouch. It provides really good quality image and when on fullscreen mode, it automatically adjusts to any sized screen - even on old movies or TV progs where the ratio is more 'square' with no distortion. There are many other plusses which I won't bore you with, but I really need it primarily for sub-titles.

Increasingly, I can't make out what is being said and it drives me crazy.

Just drag and drop subtitles into VLC player, never been able to get them to work in Media Player

'They don't work in Windows media player and yes, I can make them work in VLC and GOM.

As I have tried to explain - this is something a bit different, and in my opinion better as all you do is play the movie and it finds the subtitles and downloads them for you, all in a matter of seconds.

If only it worked properly....facepalm.gif

Presumably, this being Thai visa, we are talking Thai subtitles? How do you find them?

For the reasons I have already given in on of my replies, I am primarily looking for English sub-titles.

But If can get the English ones working, my next step is Thai subtitles for the wife.

There are a number of websites that provide Thai subtitles, but once downloaded you have to convert them into a different format for use with players like VLC or GOM. It is a bit of a time-consuming process, and often the subtitles are not available - especially for TV programmes.

I have successfully managed to download and show Thai subtitles on movies, but as I say, it's a bit of a hassle. Hence my desire to get the opensubtitles media player working properly.

BS Player can be set to search and download the relevant subtitles. Works great!

Thanks - looks good... I will download and try it.

I downloaded it and it works great - especially as far as the subs are concerned.

I thought I was home and dry until I found that it wouldn't play all my video files

There seems no rhyme or reason to it. All the movies I've tried work, and most of the TV vids - bu not all of them. For some of them, it only plays the audio.

I have googled the problem and spent the whole afternoon trying to solve it without success. Others have had similar problems, but I can't find any clear solution.

It's something to do with codecs but I've downloaded all the BS player codecs and even uninstalled and installed the player again, but no result.

I give up. I'll use it for stuff where I want the subs- assuming it is one of the files that works, and dump the other player as I can't get the subs to work properly on that. Of the two, BS is better as it works fine for most of my vids.

Thanks

A quick follow-up for anyone interested.

I had opted for BS player as it plays most vids and those it won't play I can convert to a format that it does play.

So I uninstalled the Open subtitles Player, which is now called the ALLPlayer and on the website that came up after I had uninstalled I was invited to give my reasons, which I did.

Today I received an email from the developers who asked me if my computer time was in 12 or 24-hour format. I told them it as in 12-hour format and they told me if I changed to 24-hour format the subtitles would magically appear. They were right, I have changed to 24-hour format downloaded again and it works perfectly. And it plays ALL my vids, unlike BS player

They said they will fix the bug and have a new version by the end of the month.

I was very surprised to receive a personalised reply so quickly and I will go with Allplayer.

Both BS and ALLPlayer are very similar to each other, and both download subtitles in seconds and add them to your movie/TV programme. I also sent feedback to BS player asking why their player won't play some videos. I have yet to receive a reply.

Anyway, I am spoiled for choice and will keep both players for the time being and see how they go.

The next step is to see if either of them will play Thai subtitles .... I doubt it....but you never know?

They will play Thai subtitles but you probably have to manually input the Thai subtitles website for it to find them. Also the problem generally is the title has to be exact.
