Phuket vendors cry foul over no '10% zone' at Ley Phang Beach

PHUKET: -- A large contingent of Ley Pang Beach vendors were waiting for Vice Governor Chokdee Armornrat yesterday (Oct 28) to voice their problems with the beach-management system which they say has taken away their source income during the past year.

V/Gov Chokdee and Lt Col Somphop Kamkana of the Royal Thai Navy had arrived to meet with the vendors to hear their grievances firsthand.

The beach-management system, which quickly became known as the “10% rule”, was introduced by previous Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong in January.

The rule requires that all beaches in Phuket have 10% of the beach area reserved for local vendors so they can rent out beach mats, umbrellas, serve food, provide massages and offer other services on the beach.

At Ley Phang, however, no 10% zone has been set.

“We still cannot do any business on Ley Phang Beach. Any locals who set up any business on the beach will be arrested,” said a representative of the Ley Phang Beach Vendors Group.

The group was formed at the request of previous Governor Nisit as way of giving the local vendors a single voice to express their concerns to local authorities, a factor that Ms Supitcha says has become moot.

“We have done everything that they have asked us to do. We have almost 100 members, but the group is useless,” she said.

“We are local people who just want to make a living, but we cannot work on the beach, while some resorts and hotels can serve their customers right on the sand.”

Fellow vendor Narasak Thavornjitr, who is still fighting a beach-encroachment charge in court, said he doesn’t understand why local vendors can make a living at other beaches.

A beach without vendors , or pushy hawkers would be a breath of fresh air.

Once the haze lifts of course.

What haze? No haze here.

100 members for a 10% slice of a small beach almost sounds like too many members/vendors, or do they step outside of the 10% zone to conduct their business?

It's politics. The Army took over Thailand so they and their political backers can harass their political enemies.

The ones selling off the beach needed to be spanked.

Beach vendors are the political enemies of the Army? rolleyes.gif

Political enemies those that sold or leased the area.

The vendors are just collateral damage.

Tony is suing the mayor for dereliction of duty . Tony for mayor next election... if there ever is one.

Which brings to mind, Mary Ann gets to hold on to his job, mayor for life even though he would lose an election held today, (as he freely admitted recently,) for issuing permits to operate on the beach which were rescinded without due process, and has become fabulously wealthy during his reign oveseeing about 5-6 miles of prime Thai beach real estate, yet not one hint of investigation regarding his finances.

He's paying the right people. Nothing has changed, just different people getting richer.

Sirinart National Marine Park at Layan, Similians Nat'l Marine Park.... go to parks if you want all natural and no amenities.

Meanwhile, on Phuket beaches that are the very foundation of Thailand's beach tourism, jet skis and para sailers operate but you cannot get an umbrella or have lunch in the sand?

It's as pathetically short sighted as it gets and all because no one has any moral authority here.

No problem getting umbrellas and mats.

So pleased to see these vendors thrown off the beaches. Go find a real job. There is no unemployment in Phuket, it's those juicy beach jobs on the King's beach that are gone.

A big middle finger salute to all those wanting their beach chairs back. Thank you Governor but the man who deserves the kudos is PM Prayuth. I hope he stays in power forever. Best thing that ever happened to Thailand. Keep it up!

Yes a 10 hour day for 300 baht construction job is always an option for those who earned a living and paid for permits to do so for close to a decade and then had it pulled out from under them with no warning.

Meanwhile the big clubs on Surin, and the Jet ski and parasails on all the beaches remain in business.

Please explain how this is.

Prayuth. I hope he stays in power forever.....

And so does he.

I suspect there is an element of taking out the middle income private vendors so the big conglomerated resorts such as Laguna on Bang- Tao make more profit. Taking a nice long walk? You'll have to pay at least 70 baht for a chilled soda water if Tony's and the other remaining Layan businesses are shut down.

Think I'll go support Tony's restaurant right now and get a late lunch with my toes in the sand. Then I'll enjoy one of the comfy padded loungers a bit further north whilst sipping a delicious frozen Pina Colada.

Or do I want a Margarita?

10% rule? Seems as Tony wants 10% of the beach for his personal use and money making venture. Its public property so pull it down. If it doesnt happen now it never will and the rest of the crew will move in and start erecting more structures. Now is the time.
