Kyiv in race against time to pass anti-corruption laws as EU deadline looms

UKRAINE: -- The Ukrainian parliament has adopted another five of the anti-corruption measures necessary to liberalise EU visa requirements for Ukraine.

The package of anti-corruption legislation includes an improved system to search, freeze and confiscate assets along with the correct management of said assets.

The parliament needs to pass another four before the December deadline and the subsequent EU report, which will outline if Ukraine has fulfilled the requirements.

MP Yehor Sobolev is not sure Ukraine will achieve EU visa free status: ‘‘We can’t say that today we have passed laws and tomorrow we don’t need visas. That’s nonsense. The final decision will be taken by the European Parliament and the interior ministers of the member states. They will ask ‘how is the corruption situation? Are your people rich enough not to become beggars in the EU? Is there a border problem with Russia?’‘

Ukraine’s oligarchs view anti-corruption policies with suspicion and the appointment of an anti-corruption prosecutor is proving difficult.

Our corespondent in Kyiv is Maria Korenyuk:

"The Rada must adopt 13 laws for the visa liberalisation process to go to the next stage. However time is running out before the December 15 deadline. When the European Commission report is due."
