Aung San Suu Kyi seeks “national reconciliation” meeting with military

Seen by many as the champion of democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi has inched one step closer to a landslide election victory in Myanmar.

Success in her constituency has helped her opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) win over 90 percent of the seats counted so far.

Suu Kyi has now requested a meeting with the president and the nation’s powerful military chief to discuss “national reconciliation.”

Myanmar, a former British colony, is still heavily under the influence of the military. In the first-past-the-post vote, 25 percent of the seats in the new parliament will be allotted to representatives of the armed forces.

If, as seems likely, Suu Kyi’s NLD wins the majority, it is unclear how she and the generals would work together.

I really do hope the military concede and go forward with a reconciliation process. As the UK government said yesterday they would be willing to support them and I think this is just a first step. I'd expect the American government will do the same (if they haven't already done so) as long as Britain remains a distant helper. Myanmar could find itself with a whole lot of new investors. Best of luck to both sides to finding a solution. clap2.gif

Let's all hope that this beautiful country and its people have long and happy democratic future. As for Suu Kyi being forbidden by the constitution to become PM, that constitution is not a legal one as it was written by a military that already had come to power unlawfully after it lost the last election, similarly the 25% of the cabinet having to be military and any change having to be passed by more than 75% of the vote.
