The entire galaxy is buzzing with news that the force has awoken.

The new movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in LA on December 14; four days later it'll open in Japan and, presumably, Thailand.

What do you make of this important news?

IMO, it'll be one of the best Star Wars movies yet. Disney now controls the series (after having bought Lucasfilm a few years back) and have apparently pumped more than USD 200 million into the new movie.

I'm not getting my hopes up - I made that mistake before with The Phantom Menace.

On the whole, I feel the series is overrated. The first two were half decent films, but the effects were the best thing about them - some of the dialogue and performances left a lot to be desired in my opinion. I think people let the cultural phenomena they created blind them to the weaknesses of the films themselves. The third was more of a kids film.

As for the second trilogy, they were a huge disappointment. The low point being those endless senate debate scenes. Like watching BBC Parliament with funny costumes.

Might sit in the couch/ seats with the Gf for this one.

Good idea. I reckon it'll be worth paying extra for good seats.

I saw Phantom Menace at a cinema in Siam Square (I think the cinema may have been burned down during the red shirt protests); I watched Attack of the Clones at Future Park. Both were disappointing.

I wonder if any TV members got to see the original Harrison Ford movies here in Thailand.

To say this will be better than original trilogy is simply arrogant. Still a lot of cgi in previews.... Even though they say the real sets were used. The originals had a fantastic score and a lot of creativity behind. I just hope it's better than prequels and I'll be happy.

Looks like fun in the prevues....

Exactamundo!clap2.gif Just simple entertainment. Not a Doctoral exercise........whistling.gif

If you're a minnow in the food chain, it is indeed "simple entertainment".

If you're a big boy in the food chain, it's an investment that will cost almost half a billion dollars:

As for PhD theses, Dr Djoymi's Broadcast Space: TV Culture, Myth and Star Trek won a prize for excellence at Melbourne University, 2006:

I guarantee you that someone somewhere has also written a PhD thesis about the Star Wars phenomenon.

I dont believe any of the star wars movies are true.

I certainly do hope the Star Wars movies are pure fiction. Considering the original story-line related to life, long, long ago, in a Galaxy, far, far away. If the movies were epic historical films, based-upon what was true, then it is frighteningly apparent, that we humans haven't evolved much, thru-out the past milleniums. Eh? wai.gif

Anybody here seen it in Thai yet? My Thai is not that good.....

Most US movies between the explosions → car chases and crashes → fights → gun fights → transformers → fires → disasters & cave ins it's easy to follow if in Thai.....

But this is Star Wars seemingly with lots of nuances & nostalgia with familiar voices and sounds......

Any good in Thai?

Crap. Didn't feel like Star Wars at all. Worse than prequels. They shouldn't have gotten rid of Lucas.

Can we post SPOILERS on this thread yet? Felt like an episode IV redo. And yet- you're right- didn't really feel like Star Wars.

Seems like if you want to rip the heart/soul out of a movie/classic or series just put it in Disneys hands ......

Never come away feeling like you've felt/witnessed a substantial movie - no matter how much money they've poured into it.....

What shocked me were the reviews. I usually trust them most of the time. I think some of them may be paid.

Be very careful about IMDB reviews / ratings.

"Unless it’s a franchise, Disney isn’t all that interested in pursuing big live-action films.

That was the sentiment expressed by Jay Rasulo, Disney’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, during a Q&A session Wednesday at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit.

“We’re ratcheting down live action,” he said, adding that the company is being particularly careful to make sure any of its “blockbuster live-action (films) fit into some franchise strategy.”

The strategy reflects Disney’s continuing emphasis on sequel-friendly tentpole titles like “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” from its Marvel arm, and upcoming Walt Disney Pictures’ “Maleficent,” which the studio is hoping will be the start of a new franchise. There’s evidently still room for the occasional smaller budgeted project, with “Million Dollar Arm” coming to theaters this weekend.

This isn’t a new strategy for Disney.

It’s been talking about focusing on Disney friendly tentpoles since 2010 when Iger appointed Rich Ross to run Walt Disney Studios and rethink the kinds of movies it will make."

Sad really. I used to look up to Disney, now I turn my back.
