Thailand asks Russia to buy 80,000 tonnes of rubber

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has encouraged Russia to sign a contract for the purchase of 80,000 tonnes of rubber worth US$139.1 million soon. This will ensure supplies for Russian automobile and aircraft production.

The Russian government has also agreed to persuade its private enterprises to invest in Thailand.

Russia is also interested to invest more in Thailand in particular along the special economic zones, which can link Russia from China to Danang, Vietnam, and from Yunnan, China to Asean, and to India.

Russia has also urged Thai investors to expand investment in its country. Recently a Thai sugar manufacturer invested $200 million to set up a sugar mill in Russia.

According to the Trade Negotiations Department, Russia is Thailand's 23rd-largest trading partner, with average bilateral trade worth $4.91 billion last year, accounting for 1.08 per cent of Thailand's total trade value. Thailand has a trade deficit with Russia. In the first eight months of this year, two-way trade amounted to $1.68 billion, down by 50.73 per cent year on year.

As Thailand has such surplus of rubber maybe they should develop a rubber submarine so that they don't have to buy subs from China. They should also start looking in to if they can invent an armor made from rubber to use in future Thai tanks...

Bad idea for a rubber sub...would make the sub too light...air in sub to keep everyone breathing wouldn't allow it to submerge...would be like trying to submerge a balloon full of air. Of course it's pretty hard to submerge to hiding depth in the Gulf of Thailand to begin with since the average depth is only 58 meters with a max depth of 85 meters...a sub stays visible at such minimal depths...looks like a whale swimming along. Plus a passing fishing boat with its fishing lines & hooks dragging in the water would puncture the sub's rubber hull and cause it to sink to the depths of the Gulf of Thailand (maybe that 85 meters deep trench). But the Thai Navy will probably still want to give it a try....they are surely crying for some subs to protect Thailand from invasion.

But a rubber tank has real potential...rubber would just make the striking shells bounce off. I would patent that idea quick. But of course since the intellectual property rights enforcement in Thailand is close to zero the Thai army will surely copy your idea...say it was totally their idea and you infringed on their back-dated patent.

I watched on TV where Japan has developed paper stronger than steel sooo Rubber armor would be OK to the shells would bounce off.

Part of the discussion was that Russia would buy at least 80,000 tons of rubber from Thailand in 2016 by its state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec. This would be about four times more than planned Russian purchases in 2015.

Rostec has stakes in some of Russia's largest industries and partnerships with foreign companies, with interests in weapons, cars and metals. Coincidentally, also discussed is that the Royal Thai Air force would take delivery in late 2016 or early 2017 of the first of three Sukhoi Superjet passenger aircraft.

So there is a possibility that Thailand is actually bartering rubber for military-use aircraft. That would be a clever way to make military purchases off-budget.

Non-explosive and non-energetic reactive armour

NERA and NxRA operate similarly to explosive reactive armour (ERA), but without the explosive liner. Two metal plates sandwich an inert liner, such as rubber.^[2] When struck by a shaped charge's metal jet, some of the impact energy is dissipated into the inert liner layer, and the resulting high pressure causes a localized bending or bulging of the plates in the area of the impact. As the plates bulge, the point of jet impact shifts with the plate bulging, increasing the effective thickness of the armour. This is almost the same as the second mechanism that explosive reactive armour uses, but it uses energy from the shaped charge jet rather than from explosives.^[3]

Since the inner liner is non-explosive, the bulging is less energetic than on explosive reactive armour, and thus offers less protection than a similarly-sized ERA. However, NERA and NxRA are lighter, safe to handle, safer for nearby infantry, can theoretically be placed on any part of the vehicle, and can be packaged in multiple spaced layers if needed. A key advantage of this kind of armour is that it cannot be defeated via tandem warhead shaped charges, which employ a small forward warhead to detonate ERA before the main warhead fires.
