Trump questions feasibility of religious test for refugees

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday questioned the feasibility of giving preference to Christian Syrian refugees trying to enter the country, as some of his rivals have suggested in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Speaking to reporters before a rally in Worcester, Massachusetts, Trump suggested it would be difficult to prove refugees' faiths.

"Well I don't know if you can prove that they're Christian," said Trump, who opposes allowing any migrant refugees into the country. "How are they proving it?"

Both former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have argued the U.S. refugee program should give preference to Syrian Christians over Muslims fleeing their war-torn country— a suggestion President Barack Obama condemned as contrary to American values.

Trump spoke later Wednesday in front of a crowd of thousands, arguing that his business success and temperament made him far better suited for the role of president than his rivals.

Days after going after Ben Carson during a 95-minute speech in Iowa, Trump once again focused on the retired neurosurgeon, who has been tied with Trump in some polls.

This time, Trump focused on recent reports that Carson has been struggling to grasp the complexities of foreign policy.

"We can't do this," Trump told the crowd. "We need somebody that's sharp and tough and smart and can figure it out fast."

Trump's event was interrupted several times by protesters who were escorted out by police. While Trump usually brushes off interruptions, he responded to one man with an insult.

"It's amazing. I mentioned food stamps and that guy who's seriously overweight went crazy," Trump said in response.

Before the rally, Trump, who has said he believes the U.S. will have to close some mosques because of radical activity, also predicted he'll win with Muslim voters.

"I'm going to do great with the Muslims," said Trump. "They understand what I'm saying... We're talking about safety. We're talking about security. We need it."

Trump also continued to criticize President Barack Obama's response to the attacks in Paris, blaming American actions for destabilizing the Middle East and fueling the Islamic State group's rise.

He has repeatedly criticized Democrats, including the president, for avoiding the term "radical Islamic terrorism" — a phrase they say unfairly criticizes all Muslims.

"Unless you're going to use the term, you're not going to solve the problem," he said. "I don't even know if he wants to solve the problem, frankly."

All the young and strong muslim men ought to stay home and fight for their countrys freedom. If anyone should flee, it should be women, children and old people.

So just saying "radical Islamic terrorism" somehow solves everything. Lordy.

Some lunatics like to paint Obama as a Muslim terrorist sympathizer that sneaked across the border.

Considering many of original colonies that became USA founded by religious undesirables Europe was tired of (Quakers, Puritans, English Catholics, etc), this test hokum is so off the wall. If person knows too much about bible (as many surveys have shown, atheists more up on Bible than "Christians"), it is likely they are atheists, and since they rank lower than rapists in public eye, should be excluded.

"Yes, but are you Muslim atheist or Christian atheist?"

The problem these days is leaders are taught to be on the side of everyone, so as not to lose voters or be held responsible for saying anything that would actually put them on the line.

Suddenly presidents have become nothing more than politically correct puppets that butter wouldn't melt in their mouth, or the exact opposite like the bush regime.
Someone in the middle that can actually take 2 sides of a coin and explain why both could be right and wrong and making the decision to choose one and why....
one thing is for sure right now... the Muslim population is growing and cross borders means they have to integrate with us...
However, its not working and its breeding seperation, extremism and basically the more power they have, the more likely sharia law will be pushed onto the West.,..

This simply cannot happen.... and should not happen... so politically correct politicians either need to step down or destroy us...

Yes, and some people who are not lunatics don't "like to paint Obama as a Muslim terrorist sympathizer" but are left with few alternatives in light of the inexorable rise of islamic jihad during his tenure. If we only distill his actions in this regard to one single element- his refusal to define the threat as islamic extremist/supremacy/jihad/terrorism- we realize aid and comfort is given to the enemy. Moreover, by refusing to do this single thing he sets up an impossible situation of increasing resentment toward the many hundreds of millions of muslims who have no relation to these horrors. The entire world knows, including the muslim world, that this is islamic jihad. The near pathological denial of this fact causes a deep cognitive disconnect in the world, not isolating the larger islamic community from the sins of the few, but alienating them from the perceptions of the many. On this point alone he gives enables the next phase of this issue- the battle for the assimilation or alienation of the already cooperative Western Muslim World.

Trump is correct, but for the wrong reasons. A religious test to gain entry in the US is so ridiculously alien to the US way of life to be nearly intended to stir animosity rather than court a sensible solution; the fact that it is well received speaks to how successful Obama has been in inadvertently (perhaps) alienating the larger muslim world. However, it is not the faith that is, per se, the problem, rather its the support and affirmation of sharia as a way of life that poses the threat. So, having affirmations regarding rejecting this could plausibly make sense, and be no different than the numerous government questionnaires over the years that ask "Have you now or ever or intend to support or assist" against the US constitution or US government? Lots of precedence there, but the poison pill is taqqiya. It is permissible to lie in order to guard oneself and islam. What then is the point?

What Trump is able to speak to is directly the result of Obama's strategy to deny, deny, deny a world of obvious connections. Doing so stirs up resentment and makes the masses more likely to alienate regular muslims rather than infer correctly that not all are jihadists.

(I could not imagine a mindset that sought to call those who disagree with me "lunatics." No wonder there is a mess in the world).

The ignorance on this thread is amazing!

You know what US- citizens: close the borders to the "Greatest Nation on Earth"- but please make sure, you do it both ways!

No one get's in, but you motherfathers also stay were you are!

And while you are at it: all the products you export -also to Muslim countries: keep them and try to sell them ALL in Nebraska!

Good luck with that, you nation of rednecks, hillbillies and bible- thumping morons!

I hope you elect Trump or Carson!

You deserve everything, that is coming!
