Special Report: PM highlights national reform, 20-year strategic plan

BANGKOK: Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha stated that economic reform must be carried out in line with guidelines for national reform and the country’s 20-year strategy.

In his televised national address on the program "Returning Happiness to the People,” the Prime Minister spoke about economic restructuring to boost community growth for the benefit of low-income earners and farmers.

He expects that in the first five years of the reform, Thailand’s economy will be strengthened to a satisfactory level. After that, it is likely to continue to grow further. The Prime Minister said that the global economic geography in the 21st century is changing. The world’s economic center of gravity is shifting toward Asia.

Since Thailand is situated at the center of ASEAN, it could be developed to become a regional hub for trade, investment, tourism, and logistics. He believed that Thailand would be able to cope with global economic growth, because of its readiness in terms of modern technology, creative innovations, and the use of ICT for the development of digital economy and society.

The Prime Minister pointed out that economic reform would help upgrade Thailand from being in the middle-income trap. This success depends on efficient management and integrated operations at both vertical and horizontal levels by various agencies.

"It could be developed to become a regional hub of trade.."

Does he mean like trafficking the Burmese or does he mean something that benefits the country rather and the military cohorts.

It could be, he is correct but that would require the military keeping out of politics for which they have no understanding of, nor ability to deal with.

Another day, another hub or just more hubbaballoo.

They can invest the money that they will save by not having to pay for free elections over the next 20 years.

'20 year strategy'

Is that some sort of hint?

I see it as a confirmation of what I've been suspecting all along; he's here to stay.

Dark days ahead for Thailand indeed.

It is disappointing that the PM wants the income to go from 98% poverty , by pass middle income and weeeeee up to rich income within a time frame of 200 years oh that's 20 years , PM you won't be around, I wont be around and your government certainly won't be around and the next Democratically elected government will need to cancel all your plans of grandeur , due to putting the Country into third world lower class.......................coffee1.gif

So that's the minimum timeline they intend to stay in power. Burma managed 50 years, I bet Thais are willing to top that. No worries then, it'll all get better by the 2600's.

Big Chief Five Rivers for another 20 years. Makes me throw up my stomach acid just thinking about that. Wonder if the suicide rate has risen in Thailand since the army got in? Poor taste I know, but really does anyone like the current situation? Everyday life here seems to be getting more and more serious. Lighten up big P. You might get real fans then.

Once again I read a news article with a title that includes the words "reform" and "plans", and once again I learn nothing about what the reforms or plans are. Other than the fact that it's a twenty year plan, which is scary.

PM highlights national reform, 20-year strategic plan

in other words, all talk, no action.

Come on Prayuth, you're a self-appointed "PM" with Art 44, absolute power, no opposition and support of the country's richest elites, and in 18 months you can't get any economic programs going and keep talking about what you "will do" next year, or about your "plans" and 20-year "visions".

If you steal the people's sovereignty, then you could at least do something with all that power, but no, you just sit on your hands waiting...

Well, actually, you are doing a great job at purging any and all opposition, and crushing human rights, but heck, you are really just a Thai Military General and not a real "PM", even if self-appointed.

"democratic soldier", my a.... More like an inexplicably wealthy, career military man....

This guy is really funny. A 20 year plan from a man that was to return the country once the war on the streets had stopped. The people want a election now and his talking 20 year plans and delaying draftings and so on. I mean really I think its going to there heads.

The next PM will not follow your plan. This tactic may work to keep the heads thinking your the only salvation. But I dealt it..... Entertaining

He is on a power trip and soon will be pushing his limits.. A true man of his word sticks by his word and so far all he is doing is evading the justice. Delivering his own in replace of true justice

Gos Bless this man its needed

Hiliarious to say the least the jokes just keep rolling in :)

hubs, technology, Tourism can they come out with any other words ?

What a lot of rubbish the truth is the basics in Thailand like government officials in immigartion are still giving it to visitors !

The corruption is still in motion and no ones looking at creating any hubs there.

Twenty year plan? I thought we were having a general election in 2017. Supposing the new government doesn't like the plan and wants to change or scrap it. Yeah, I know - stop asking awkward questions!

The Prime Minister's 20-year plan to upgrade Thailand from being in the middle-income trap seems to betray Buudhism.

If one is in the moment one shouldn’t be thinking about the future. With mindfulness, thinking about the future happens in the present moment. Instead Prayut has fallen into the trap of planning for the future based on a Western materialistic worldview, That viewpoint seems consistent with someone who is used to wealth and power.
