BANGKOK: -- Thailand was named the Best Beach Destination 2015 from National Geographic Traveller Russia, a print and online magazine, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Thailand was also voted the Best Beach Resort via an online poll from 240,000 readers.

"Thailand is very honoured to have received such prestigious awards from one of the top travel magazines in Russia as well as to have been voted online by its readers. Both honours are testaments of Thailand as a top beach getaway destination among travellers from Russia, one of the top 10 tourist markets to Thailand," said Eumporn Jiragalwisul, director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Moscow Office.

In 2014, Thailand welcomed about 1.6 million visitors from Russia. In 2015, from January to October, a total of 649,188 visitors from Russia have visited Thailand.

Travellers from Russia are attracted to Thailand's beach resorts including Phuket, Pattaya and Koh Samui. Apart from daily direct flights from Moscow to key gateways in Thailand, several charter flights are available during the winter season from various cities in Russia and the CIS, allowing travellers from this region to experience the nice and warm weather in Thailand.

National Geographic Traveller Russia is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Published five times per year, the magazine has a circulation of 110,000 and a total readership of 746,800. It is also available in an iPad-version.

Thailand was presented as one of the nominees in the category of Beach Leisure, and got the award with 14 per cent. There were 26 competitors, including Spain (12 per cent), Philippines (10 per cent), Azerbaijan (9 per cent), Greece (7 per cent), and Montenegro (6 per cent).

Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Phuket were recently voted among the 20 most popular and best value cities in Asia by US travellers, according to TripAdvisor's TripIndex report.

And National Geographic Traveller Russia owns planes that go only to Thailand, up-sell tons of services, and make tons more money when their clients go to Thailand...........

I wonder how many of those voting online have actually been to LoS or were voting on photos of supposedly ' Thai ' beaches which actually tend to be in the Philippines but TAT are happy to claim as locations here.

Yes, but... no bikinis, beware of the jet ski scam, be carful not to loiter after dark or you'll get mugged,

can't lay on the beach where you like, those pesky beach's chairs people will shooo you away,

those food/massage/fortune tellers/trinket paddlers on the beach will not leave you alone fro a minute....

other than that, yes, Thailand is a good beach country.....

The beaches here are cesspools of sewage. The sand is filthy. Touts and scammers everywhere. Just perfect for the Russians I suppose.

My mrs was stunned by the beaches in NZ, but also puzzled and wanted to know why no have (tatty) restaurants, vendors and crappy developments all over them. Thais really would concrete over them if the price were right

Pathetic...these people have no idea what a beach is.

If you grow up and see nothing but crap all around you then you think this is normal.

If I had never been here and had paid Thomsons or Thomas Cook for a two week package beach holiday and turned up and saw the minging mess on my first day I would be able to take them to court and get my money back plus compensation.

Amazing how nearly all the comments ridicule this news items about Thailand.

But it generally fits the TV reader profile; they read some positive news about/for Thailand and go nuts.

I bet the commentors are not in Thailand for the beaches.

There are some very nice clean beaches in Thailand but you don't generally get there on a package tour. (Which is why they are clean). My son wanted to come to Pattaya on a last minute, I told him to go to the Canaries.

I have twice heard tourists complaining about the filthy beaches (and other connected rip offs) and saying they won't be back. I don't go to those beaches either after the first time.

Keep your head in the sand mr. Apologist. You really don't see the utter disregard for the environment in this country? Are you Russian? Haha
