The Tonbari family of Syrian refugees arrive in Canada

MONTREAL: -- Ibrahim Tonbari and his family are starting a new life in Canada.

He escaped from the war-torn city of Homs in Syria to neighbouring Lebanon with his wife Zaineb and four children.

They were granted permanent Canadian residence as part of the country’s programme to settle 25,000 refugees from Lebanon and Jordan.

“Out of the 25,000, I’d say there will be at least 9,000 who will come to Quebec and that about 80 percent of will come to Montreal,” Denis Coderre, Montreal’s Mayor told euronews.

“As a main city in Quebec, Montreal can accommodate … we have 1.8 million inhabitants, so it’s something we’re used to .. not only in terms of refugees but in terms of newcomers, so we will fully play our role.”

The Canadian government has contracted the International Organization of Migration to organise the new arrivals.

Each person receives the coveted document containing permanent residence in Canada.

I can't believe this guy was not charged with human trafficking. The other occupants of the boat fingered him as the operator of the boat. Of course that was swept under the rug. coffee1.gif

Well done, Canada for offering help and compassion to those in distress.

The hypocrisy of some TVF posters is twofold.

1. The wars these people are fleeing from have been caused by the west's historical interference in Middle Eastern affairs, so we have a duty of care for the victims of the problems we created.

2. Many of the TVF xenophobes are descendants of refugees and migrants themselves

Given permanent residence on a plate? Surely ALL new immigrants need to prove themselves over a period of time before PR is offered. They need to prove their loyalty to their new country, ability to integrate and to learn the new language and culture.

I fear that these Liberals/PC-lovers will never learn.
