isnt the tuition very cheap at cmu? this girl told me shes doing accounting for $600/year

Accounting is vocational college, not university.

CMU offers accounting major for study.

so how much does the avg tuition cost per year at cmu?

(sorry btw this multi-quote thing isnt working for me)

"are all chiang mai chicks like this, like all shy and stuff but actually dtf?"

No, all Chiang Mai women are different, and I won't attempt to generalize them all.

I will give an approximate generalization of some of the universities they go to--there are huge differences between the schools and social activities of their students.

Chiang Mai University is the serious university; it discourages its students from getting into relationships (many ignore this) or taking part-time jobs. It also makes incredible demands on their time with academics and mandatory activities. On average they log much less bar time than other university students, though they still get out on occasion. Also, since the women will earn degrees that are respected across Thailand, they are not as desperate to find a man to take care of them. Many of them want a man, but they tend to have high standards.

Rajabhat University is much less demanding on its student's time and activities. It has flexible schedules that allow students to work and study. The degree isn't as respected and the women seem more interested in landing a man who will give them a future than the CMU students. Many of the waitresses that work on Nimmanhamin are Rajabhat students hoping to meet a quality man. Most prefer Thai men, others are open minded, and in general their standards aren't as high as the CMU women.

I won't offer an opinion on Payap, Far Eastern, MaeJo or other university students since I haven't met enough of them. I think student attitudes in Payap and MaeJo fall between CMU and Rajabhat, but I can't say with certainty.

Also around Chiang Mai are "technical universities", which are more like trade schoolsarrow-10x10.png. The students wear uniforms like the other academic universities, and the girls look great in the black skirts and white blouses. I think in general the differences between the students in technical universities and academic schools in Chiang Mai are similar to the differences between students who go to trade schools and academic universities in the west. They are generally from poor families and I get the impression that many of these students are very open to finding a sponsor who will make life easier for them.

I'll offer one generalization about the university women--they're thinking about their future. If you find one who makes it easy for you, you may safely assume she expects more than a night in bed.

thanks for this its really informative. And whats with this "not being seen in public with a ferrang" thing. Do other thai people look down on a girl if shes dating a white guy? Like that makes her a gold digger? Also Im asking from the point of view of someone whos like 25> cause no offense but obvs if youre some older guy its gonna have a stigma anywhere in the world if youre dating some girl whos 10-20 years yougner than you, but does this still apply to my age demopgraphic? Cause I mean Ive used tinder since I been here (never actually linked anyone yet though) but Ive gotten messages from what seemed to be good girls who wanted to meet for lunch during the day and stuff. Im jw cause I'll prob be here for awhile so youre saying the only chicks Im cuffing are either gonna be gold-diggers or embarrassed to be seen in public with a white guy?

You use tinder ?

Socially insecure ?

You are in Thailand, They are all the same.

I can think of four appearance issues that will cause Thai people to assume you are with a rented girlfriend:

Big age difference. This doesn't seem to be a problem for you.

The woman's appearance. Obvious tattoos and/or bare shoulders and cleavage shown by a Thai woman (western women are allowed more slack) are generally taken to indicate she's a pro. Fortunately tight fitting clothes and showing a lot of leg is acceptable.

Your appearance. If you look like a bum (or a backpacker who doesn't wash often) Thai people will assume you are a sex tourist and good Thai women will avoid you.

What you do in public. Good, traditional girls don't allow any physical contact in public. Innocent hand-holding is rare.

I'm probably missing a few. And some people will assume the worst regardless. You can't please everyone.

So yea im like pretty confused cause that first girl I mentioned in this thread who I thought wasnt interested (assuming it was because I made no moves) actually texted me tn asking me to go to dinner with her and her sis, shes like very cute but seems like she may have not even ever been with a guy but its wierd cause i did meet her at a club with her friend and they were both drinking a bottle of tequila but I saw her fb and she looks like some very studious "good" girl. What do you think her motive is here and how should I make a move haha. Im not really like this bad at swerving at chicks but I have no real experience with thai girls

I still wanna hang out with her cause she seems different than most thai chicks and shes also very good looking (in that kawaii type of way) like the times I went out with her she refused to let me buy her drinks, actually bought me shots then even drove me home with her car. Like shes been subtly flirting with me over text before but I think maybe shes waiting for me to make a move? I'm pretty confused how to go about this like how can I tell if shes trynna get with me and how should I go about it, it seems harder to pick up on the queues of thai chicks than it is of western girls

All of the people characterizing the behavior of girls according to the university that they attend are missing the primary influence on Thai girls' behavior - Thai culture. Flirtyness is not a positive characteristic in Thai culture. When I taught in Chiang Mai, I had girl students who wrote papers lamenting the fact that they could not hold hands with their boyfriends without being negatively stereotyped as "bad girls." If your expectations are out of line with Thai culture, you will never understand what is going on.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
’Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.

A.E. Housman never came to Thailand.

A trip here would have taught the lad a wee bit more about life than he ever learned in Shropshire.

Housman in fact never went to Shropshire.

I'm 60,

I wouldn't even look at a girl less than 20 years younger than me!

Thais consider any Thai girl with a foreign man as less than respectable.

With a white foreign man being the extreme bottom of the barrel.

Lots of uni girls for sale.

A few years back a Thai family turned up at my place with their 18 yo daughter.

"Would you consider marrying her, they asked, she wants a house, a car, and her university degree.

In return you can have as many babies with her as you like."

It was a serious offer, nice girl too, I still have the photos.

I have been here since my mid 20s.. You will learn..

Thai social mores are different.. being a provider is a strong part of attraction and appeals.. Not only in older guys and young girls, but why you see dating restricted between social classes here so much. Baby needs a new pair of shoes, prada handbag, an new smartphone.

Lots count of the amount of 20 something year olds who met a 'good girl' and was cleaned out or confused as to why it broke down. Girls going to the west and expecting it to be hiso parties and jet setting, when in fact the 25 year old guy is just starting out on his career..

Obviously culture influences behavior. So does opportunity and economics.

Students going to an undemanding university that have lots of free time are more likely to be out and about than students going to demanding universities that allow their students very little free time.

Poor women in the market for a man will put greater emphasis on practical considerations--money and stability--than rich women who assume they will always have basic needs covered. These rich women can put a higher priority on less tangible qualities, such as social status.

So while the OP was ruminating on the above, his already extended tourist visa will be expiring this Monday smack in the middle of a big holiday weekend with all the local Thai embassies/consulates closed many days.

Simple equation: No Visa = No chicks.

You are wrong... A.E. Housman did indeed visit Shropshire during his lifetime.

Excuse me for bluntly contradicting you.

You may be confused by the fact that A Shropshire Lad was mostly written while Housman was living at Highgate.

You highlight a valid point.. One friend of mine used to have free time and could hop on a plane head down to bangkok to party or hit an island for a few days.. Now shes finished school and started work for an airline theres no time left in the schedule.. Its just dawning on her the party years are going to be curtailed if she wants a real job like shes been working to for the last few years..

I spent several weeks by UDRU in 2012. Got up with jet-lag on a Saturday morning at 6am, took a walk around, and there were still many students working on Large Changs. 2 hours=800 THB with one of them, but of course, I would never "pay for it," bwaahaha. I see them up at all hours around CMU, but nothing like that. I think we consumed 5 X the alcohol per student at my Uni, when the age was 18, compared to the CMU students. It is challenging academically, and most of them seem to really be "on the go." Overall, very nice, well-mannered bunch.
