3 Bangkok United Fc VS Sunbelt Asia United 4

''Not The Victory But The Action,Not The Goal But The Game. Indeed The Glory''

Sunbelt Asia United cruised into a 4-0 lead but in the end were grateful to claim a 4-3 victory after a spirited late fight back from Bangkok United.

After several friendly fixtures at the inadequate National Stadium Training Pitch and last weeks opener at the bumpy Horseshoe Point down in Pattaya, the return to the green, green grass of Pattana School was much anticipated. As Bangkok United play their fixtures on a Sunday, any plans for the usual lazy Sunday afternoon in front of the TV had to be shelved as two Uniteds were set to clash.

Last week’s 6-0 reverse to Pattaya City forced Sunbelt coach Tytus to ring the changes as we went in search of our first points of the season. Our coach made it clear in his pre-match talk that nothing less than 3 points would suffice. The game kicked off with Bangkok United on the offensive. For the first ten minutes, they controlled possession with their skillful number 26 being prominent in all their attacks. It didn’t take long for Sunbelt’s back four of Malky, Bukhari, Super Soon and ManU Mike to come to terms with our tricky opponents. The rest of the first half was fairly uneventful. However Sunbelt did open the scoring on 28 minutes after a Japanese attack was broken down; Huberto seized the ball and played a long ball over the Japanese defence to leave Emilio the Dude, with a one on one with their keeper. Emilio won the battle and we went in with a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Sunbelt started the second period hoping to add to their lead. Not long after the restart, another long ball found Keita in acres of space with Emilio screaming for a square pass. Unfortunately Keita wasted possession but made up for it 5 minutes later as he doubled our lead from a similar situation.

The third followed shortly as Pon the Pizza Boy collected his first ever Sunbelt goal with a fine individual effort. Sunbelt looked to be in total control of the game and on 60 minutes Arsenal Joe collected the ball on the half way line. His pacy run was brought to an abrupt end just inside their box as a sudden gust of wind blew him over the Japanese defenders leg. Loud appeals for a penalty from Arsenal Joe’s on looking mother were noted by the man in black and he duly pointed to the spot much to the bemusement of Bangkok United. Up stepped the Dude to bag his second of the day and to give us a 4-0 lead. Game over? Not on your life mate!

During the game, Bangkok United had struck our crossbar a couple of times but apart from that had never really threatened our goal. On 68 minutes an innocuous looking cross crept under our goalkeeper’s diving body and left the Bangkok United striker with a tap in from about one yard out. Up until then our debutant keeper had performed well between the sticks.

3 minutes later it was 4-2 when the ball broke to the Japanese player in the box and his resultant shot found the bottom corner of the net. Sunbelt were looking very nervous and with about 3 minutes left to play the Japanese number 26 collected the ball just inside our half. He then went on a mazy dribble beating several Sunbelt players before unleashing a rasping drive into the top of the net. It was now time for desperate measures as we tried to cling on for a victory. Sunbelt were relieved to hear the final whistle and claim a precious 3 points much to the disappointment of the newly formed branch of The Winking Frog’s Japanese Supporters Club.

Final Score – Bangkok United 3 Sunbelt Asia United 4.
