I've been here in Thailand on a non-immigrant O multiple entry visa. I had been under the impression (apparently falsely) that a foundation couldn't give a work visa to foreigners. Anyway, I would like to extend this visa without returning to the states where I was issued the initial visa. I've heard that I can extend it at the immigration office in Mae Sai. Is this true?

Also, it expires on the 11th of October so I'm pressed on time. I know that I can cross the border up until the 11th and get another 90 days, what I don't know is whether this visa can be extended during those 90 days or whether it has to be done before the Non-immigrant visa itself expires on the 11th.

I'm currently in the process of getting that work permit that I was previously told a foundation couldn't give me (it, apparently, will be approved and returned on the 18th). After being run around all over and hearing conflicting stories from every official it seems that I on the 18th I can extend my non-immigrant O but must pay a fine of 500/day for every day that my non-imm O has been expired (3000 baht). All paperwork that I know of has been prepared: photocopies of every page of my passport, signed guarantee of work letters from the Foundation and such.

Can anyone confirm or clear up any of this. After all the run around I'm quite confused. I'll be in Chiangmai tomorrow to get new pages added to my passport as I don't have any full pages left only 7 scattered places and then up to Mae Sai to get my 90 days.

In summary: I have an expiring non-immigrant multiple entry categroy O visa and a work permit in the works. The visa expires the 11th, the permit is ready the 18th. Can I extend this visa in country? If so can it be extended at the immigration office in Mae Sai. If so, must it be extended before the 11th or can it be extended during the 90 days I have after its expiration (assuming I crossed the border the day before). I hope this post isn't as confused as I am.

Look at the multiple-entry non-O visa in your passport (not the stamp you got when you entered Thailand). If the validity of your visa expires on 11 October, leave and re-enter Thailand not later than 11 October and you will get a new entry stamp in your passport permitting you to stay again for 90 days.
