Why would the first thing a policeman in Pattaya says is "passport sir" when he has just stopped you over for a driving infringement?

Surely they would ask for your drivers licence.

I dont know about Pattaya, but where we are 200 bht would dotongue.png

End of traffic infringement. You simply do not need your passport 24/7 but its certainly acceptable for Plod to ask you to produce it within 24 hours etc. Absolutely agree with that

You can produce it within 24 hours, but on rare occasion, you'll wait in the hoosgaw until you do produce it. Which puts you into a conundrum unless you can call someone to bring it...

Codswallop utter tripe,Sorry.....

You simply do not get locked in a Police Cell because you cannot produce it on the spot. This is not Iraq under Saddams direction.

So single travellers by your definition would stay in the Cells indefinately as I for one wouldn't give out a safe combination or the whereabouts of a key to simply anyone.

Plod most welcome to accompany me to get it.

It is absolutely true. Here is but one time:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/798592-police-raid-on-m-club-foreigners-arrested/

I met a guy who was there and said a few where in jail till the next day. Not a place I'd prefer to spend 10 seconds let along all night.

There have been raids at various pubs the past few years. No passport = an on the spot fine. No biggie, but sometimes, you do get hauled down to the police station. No passport within 24 hours and your off to Bangkok.

As impulse says, just because something happened (or not) in the past is no guarantee of what will happen (or not) in the future. TiT! LOL

P.S. you have read about the passport scams in Bangkok, right? Haven't heard of one since the coup, but before, it was a regular thing. Especially on Lower Suk or Thong Lor. No passport = 2,000 Baht fine on the spot or go to the police station.

Well my Passport has stayed in the safe the last 23 years and thats precisely where its staying. Nobody in their right mind takes their Passport out and about with them 24/7

Well my Passport has stayed in my pocket the last 15 years and thats precisely where its staying. Nobody in their right mind leaves their Passport in the safe 24/7.

I rarely use a safe. Just hide the passport inside my luggage somewhere. I've spent 300+ nights in hotels here. Never had a problem. I rarely read about thefts from hotel safes here either. A few yes, but not many. And most are thefts of money, jewelry or cameras. And many are in the cheap backpacker places with the crimes being committed by other backpackers!
