Have been told that the roots can undermine foundations and should be felled if near the house. Anyone have any experience?

Pdaz
I have one in my front yard. Probably 6m from the house and 2m from tiled driveway. I've never heard anyone mention root issues with it Edited December 7, 2015 by Pdaz
villagefarang
I have heard warnings about those tree roots but I suppose it depends on location, how good your foundation is and how big it gets
xen
I am not familiar with this tree so i goggled it . From this website : http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Terminalia+ivorensis I found this about the root system : "The tree forms a good tap root supported by 6 - 8 powerful lateral roots There is also evidence of a widespread and rather superficial root system" The article also states : "The tree is naturally not long-lived, and in old age the heart-wood becomes inferior, hollow or brittle Cultivation should ensure felling at the optimum age The rotation applied in favourable locations in Africa is 40 years". (as a plantation timber spp) One thing i would not do if you do have one or plant one is let anybody put those ridiculous wooden structures around the tree . teatree
Thanks for the replies. I have heard the roots extend out as far as the branches and the trees can get get very big.
surat04
They also drop thousands of leaves and make a right mess. They will also affect your lawn. If you have one.

D3030
You will die before it becomes a problem - just remove it - to not worry about things cracking in and around the house..
