Weather this January in Maehongson

Featured Replies

My g/f and I want to go to Maehongson in early January for a couple of days. She said they might be starting to burn up there in January which, if in fact is the case, then we will not go. Does anyone know if they start their widespread burning of their fields in early January, and if so, how bad is it?

January through early February should still be fine, even in Mae Hong Son.

Early January is the best time of the year, actually. Would be hard to think of a better time to visit the North.

Burning to start in 9-minutes.....will last for 1,353 years......so stay away!!!

unless your gf is HOT....then i'll have the private jet pick her up

There are no weather guarantees and things can vary greatly from one day to the next. That said, take your chances and I hope you have a great trip.

Although there is no weather guarantee (#4, villagefarang), I would like to confirm Winnie...'s posting

When friends or family members would like to see me here in the remote Mae Hong Son area I tell them best time of the year is from November to the middle of February. I also advise them to take some warm clothing into their luggage.

Smoke? There can be fires in remote mountain areas (i.e. Kuet Sam Sip, ....) even during the time mentioned before. But it's not the same as in the "high season" (of fires), normaly starting at the beginning of March or a little bit earlier or later.

I was there mid Jan last year and the weather and atmosphere were very pleasant. There was sunshine And heat on my face during the day but then a cool evening and cold night followed. There were very few westerners and I don't remember any obvious Chinese behaviour.

Will be cold enough that you two will need to stay under the covers the entire time. So sad.

Yes.. It can be freaking cold up hills in Mae Hong Son. Approaching zero C even if you're lucky.
