Royal Thai Navy briefed on illegal fishing efforts

BANGKOK, 17 December 2015 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Navy has convened a meeting on illegal fishing to discuss Thailand's progress in addressing the issue over the last few months.

The Department of Fisheries has briefed Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy Admiral Na Areenich on the report it presented to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). DG MARE is responsible for the implementation of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy and Integrated Maritime Policy.

The report includes information regarding efforts that Thailand have taken to keep illegal fishing at bay. They include establishing cooperation with a third country, assigning fisheries observers to fishing vessels and assistance to Thai fishermen detained in Indonesia.

The Office of the Secretary General to the Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing has provided progress reports of all units involved in the operation.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Royal Thai Navy has informed the Navy Chief of all illegal fishing and human right violation cases it has been dealing with since May.

"They include establishing cooperation with a third country, assigning fisheries observers to fishing vessels..."

The last six words wreak of brown envelopes, and which 3rd country? That part makes no sense at all.

I can imagine sitting in on a meeting like this.

"We will establish cooperation with a 3rd country". They all sit around and nod in agreement.

I would speak up & say "Hold the phone Somchai. Who is the 2nd country? Let's name them first, and why do we need a 3rd country?"

At this point I would be kicked out for thinking too much.

I think the navy is fully aware of the effort that has gone into the illegal fishing industry. Mostly effort to maintain staus quo while pretending to care.

As part of his policy for accountability and transparency, can the Prayut regime also make public progress reports on enforcement actions on UII fishing and human rights violations? Right now everything seems to be only for (NCPO) Club Members only.

For the life of me I don;t know what the Navy are doing here? They should be out stopping fishing boats and checking them, and in my opinion, if any slaves are found on board, the captain should have to walk the plank. For god's sake tow the violators in and impound their vessels.
