I have to tell you all that anything that is this big for the Thai Economy will 100 % effect most of you. Any ban on Seafood would kill the economy.

100's of factories closing, millions of jobs gone. And the Thai would take it out on Americans, and anyone who looks like an American. Also the sweet place you call home( Sunshine, cheap beer, and girls, will quickly, vanish! A total seafood ban would be the same as no heavy manufacturing in any western country. No one likes Slavery, and yes it should stop.

Their Russian friends will gladly take up a lot of the slack... Not so big on scruples but Rubles, yes.

Until the US cleans up it's act of allowing the FDA, politicians, big Pharma, Big food, GMO companies (such as Monsanto and Dow) and the government agencies that collude with the others mentioned to have free rein to do what they want in order to maximise profits at people's expense, then they should have NO say in Thai's commercial practices.

People might notice, (not likely but could happen), that this has nothing to do with having a say about Thailand's commercial practices. This is all about America, specifically who they buy from. Thailand can do whatever it wants. However as America buys over 40 per cent of Thailand shrimp production, losing that market might be, uh, a problem, they might want to consider changes ..... if not ... cool, more power to them ... then .

Perhaps China would buy half of Thailand's shrimp production ... or maybe Russia How about Albania?

You're probably right. Mind you, the practice of slavery in the Thai seafood industry has been rather a poorly kept secret for some time, and perhaps that means that the western retailers are complicit, so maybe being left with unsaleable stock would serve them right?

If it were really that bad, then the annual no-fishing-period or the recent crackdown-on-unlicensed-boats would have caused riots in the streets, and millions of Thais to starve-to-death, which they didn't !

Lets just hope that the country continues to address the problem, recognising that international-concern is high, and something real needs to be done.

It mostly affects jobs for Burmese, many of whom will be able to get jobs in the growing Myanmar seafood industry. As for the money, my guess is that very little of it is taxed, and that a large portion ends up at tax havens abroad.
