OP, what is your obvious reason for driving away?

Who drove away? are you referring to me?
I guess you never said you did. But you did write "...if I was near an accident I had no part in I would get away as quickly as I could for obvious reasons." What are the obvious reasons?
The obvious reasons are I may have been blamed because in Thai eyes, I am the rich Farang. I then agreed with Cypress Hill who post made a lot of sense.

I asked the question "what would you have done?" because I wasn't sure at first what I would have done.

I think it's more likely no one would care what you saw, the cops would side with whoever had the most money, and you'd just get frustrated over the injustice that would eventually ensue.

No Eldragon, I know you were not flaming, I was referring to Tassini #19. He said me and other posters were spineless.

What would you hope/expect other posters to do if it was your daughter on the motorbike and she was in fact hit? Look the other way? Pretend not to have seen anything? Not get involved?

I hope to God that you/they would have rendered whatever assistance you could to the best of your ability in the hope of perhaps saving a life. I would...and have...in Thailand.

Some of the falsehoods (police/money/farangs fault) often repeated here have become "facts" or urban legends and should be ignored by all decent people both Thai and farang.

it would really depend on the outcome and on whether I felt I could do something to help. if not... I'd drive away.

"driving too fast" is subjective - I even have no idea of what the speed limit is on Sukhumvit?

I once witnessed a brain dead very tanned and nearly skeletal guy drive off with his moped straight into traffic. luckily, the situation became more comic than dramatic, the first car hit the back of his motorcyle, and he somehow jumped off from it and landed on his feet, while a car coming the other way crushed the remains of his motorcycle. Unfazed, the guy just walked to the other side of the road and sat down under a tree, it was totally surreal.

I have real trouble understanding why some peope tend to start driving when traffic is approaching.

Yes, your last paragraph is so true, but the skeletal guy was probably on something, Yabba or something like that.

I get that it would be personally safer to walk..., but I would feel bad about walking if the worst happened.
Although someones bound to chip in that I'm way off base and that this issue has zip to do with Buddhism..., but I feel the possibilities involved within this incident reflect Thailand's version of Buddhism(Theravada).
Oh well..., their country - their choice.

I saw an accident happen right in front of me while I was walking down the street. A car cut from the inside lane to turn into a lot. Pulling right in front of a motorcycle. The passanger, a girl was thrown 10 feet and landed on her helmetless head. The driver of the bike wanted to kill me. Attacked me swinging his helmut and kicking.......

Off the OP topic, again. Are you stating that the motorbike driver attacked you, despite the fact that you had absolutely nothing to do with the accident? Huh? Please tell me it ain't so!

+1

I read, and then reread NickJ's post, as I figured I missed something the 1st time.

Doesn't make any sense.

So by the sounds of it if a farang was injured in an accident you'd all ignore and walk by. It may be you one day.

I don't decide to help or not help people depending on their skin colour.

I don't help anyone, that isn't my family, or I don't know.

It might be different if I were a doctor.

Unless you're a Doctor or Paramedic you have no business interfering in any accident.

Plenty of Thais will come rushing to help when there's an accident.

Very selfish attitude. Maybe it makes you feel less guilty if you don't help. Let's hope you don't need help from a farang one day

If I was injured in any way the last person I would need is someone like me offering to 'help' - I could offer no help as I'm not a medical professional.

If you move someone who has a serious neck / spine injury you can make things much worse. Never intervene unless you really know what you're doing.

Nonsense, most people have heard about not moving someone with potential spine injuries and not taking a helmet off, but in some cases you may be able to help. If someone is truely clueless, drunk or just thick maybe its best to be extra cautious. Edited by scubascuba3
