Thai embassy in Myanmar closed until December 30th due to protests in Yangon
Samui Times

THAILAND -- The Thai embassy in Yangon, Myanmar is closed until December 30th after the court’s decision to sentence two Burmese nationals to death for murdering two British tourists last year.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Burmese authorities have reinforced security for the Thai embassy and Thai nationals in Yangon as a precautionary measure. The protest has so far been peaceful.

The Burmese authorities will keep their citizens informed of the justice system in Thailand where the ruling can be appealed. They have also reiterated their full compliance with the Thai legal system. The MFA has claimed the relationship between the two countries will remain strong.

The MFA will also provide assistance to Myanmar whenever it wants to appeal against the Thai court and act as a facilitator in a bid to foster a better understanding.
