Long Time Patong Icon Patrick , of Patrick's Bar - Soi San Sabai - Passed

Friends emailed me here in Pattaya to tell me Patrick had passed on Christmas Day , and as best we could find out was a lung problem and turned into Pneumonia ...but no matter what caused it , he was 71 years of age , Born Oct. 12th,1944 , we always celebrated our B Days every year for a long time. Patrick was a Phuket Icon , going back to his days closer to the Beach and then in the same spot on Soi San Sabai from early 90s.

There's still a bunch of us Patong old timers hangin' on at the Island of Phuket , I moved on 2 1/2 years ago , sorry to bring one more bit of sad News , to all the Ex-Pat friends of over 25 years of Patrick's !

Patrick and I saw each other regularly in my 15 years as a Manager-Chef-Music Director and DJ @ Rock Hard and until one of his wives and I had a falling out on my Birthday , she was mad I brought a crowd to the Bar & we went to Old Hard Rock Cafe instead with mac and had a ball !, Unfortunately, she got axed not too much later. She was trying to steal the bar away from Pat but failed . He will be missed by a lot of Nite Owls !

But Patrick seldom took sides in arguments , except on Music , which he loved old time R&R

I heard a wake was held Today at the bar , not enough time for anyone not there in Phuket already !

See you on the other Side of Life , Patrick ! Your Friend , Big Bill

Used to have the best fish 'n' chips in Patong about twenty-five years ago.

Sorry to here about his death. Must've been one of the oldest still existing businesses in Patong.

R.I.P. Patrick.

We shared many an evening and many beers over the years.

One of the few people I could be sure of meeting up with everytime I go back.

You will be missed.

On-On to the big bar in the sky.

Wanda.

To everyone who sent a message here

thank you very much. I am Patrick`s son , Jonathan. I didn`t find out about the passing of my father until January 11th when I recieved a letter from the British embassy here in Japan. I am so glad to hear that he was a popular figure in Phuket. The last time we met was in 1988 and I had one drunken telephone call with him (drunken on my part) in 1998. I never really knew him that well. When I was about 6 years old, he, like many men of the 70`s went abroad to improve their lot, in his case to Saudi Arabia. His visits were intermittent and we were never close, as father and son should be. However, I see our similarities. I also found my way to Asia, shared his love of music, I remember he played the drums. He took me to many places after his divorce from my mother, Barbados, Spain, Greece. He bought me a lovely guitar and I felt he was sad about not being able to be a constant father. But at the same time I understand his desire to move. I felt the same urge. Growing up in Blackpool has that effect! Studying in Holland led to Japan, although I`m probably here to stay after 15 years. I have also been divorced, and remarried 4 years ago, but if we have any children, it`s unfortunate that they will never know their grandfather on my side.

Anyway, I plan to visit with my wife this year, and although I myself am not Buddhist, it`s in keeping with the traditions of my adopted country that we come and pay our respects. I just heard that my father`s ashes have been scattered into the sea, which is also my own wish, having grown up by the seaside.

Thank you all for your kind words and for helping me to have a picture of my father, who I never really knew.

I have known Patrick since his early days in Patong and have seen his circle of regulars (once a year or once or more a week) become his circle of friends over the years.

I have been visiting Patong on my own for some years, but could always rely on tagging along with the crowd at Patrick’s. His bar became a meeting point for us night-time lovers.

Even now, his staff have been doing a good job of keeping the bar open for us until the night of 30th January when the bar closes for the final time. The only thing missing will be Patrick’s bar closing mantra “I’m going to bed”.

It will be the end of an era.

RIP Patrick.

All in all, I believe a bit of a microcosm for Patong.

I remember when Big Bill was the DJ at Hard Rock, upstairs was Larry with the Rock Country, a lot of people knew each other, would meet and greet night in-night out, buy rounds, good times. Patong was a much friendlier place. After chatting up a lady, then you felt o.k. about buying her a drink as opposed to first words "buy me drink, buy me drink".

Times change, none of us can stop that, but I think the friends and friendliness of Patong moved off of Bangla to places like Patrick's some years ago but now find it difficult to stay in business. There is already a big thread on the downturn of business so I'll not dwell there.

RIP the once friendly party place Patong, RIP Patrick and condolences to his friends and family.

My sentiments exactly on the Patong of old & glad to have experienced the good old days down Bangla & the occasional drink at Patrick's in the wee hours of the morning, sometimes with Big Bill in attendance. I fondly remember, at Rock Hard, being able to persuade Big Bill, with a double vodka, to draw a particular number in the titty tequila contest, usually for visiting friends to experience.

Patrick always looked pretty dour probably because of his relaxed frame of mind. One of the original stalwarts in Patong. RIP old friend.
