Marrying my Lao girlfriend in Thailand, what are the requirements?

Featured Replies

My Lao girlfriend and I live together in TH. Because a foreign marriage in Lao is a rediculous bureaucratic headache I am looking for the other options, such as a marriage in Europe or in Thailand. Anyone gone this route (amphur-only marriage in Thailand) or knowing more about it?

Thx!

read this you both require Affirmation of Freedom to Marry.

function in the future

To get married in Europe she would have to have more than a tourist visa, i.e proof of residency.

Try America

Marrying in Thailand is impossible unless she can get the Affirmation from the Lao Embassy. I plan to marry my Lao GF in the UK. The UK have a Marriage Visitor Visa. It involves about a month's stay in the UK. Are you British? Hong Kong is another option.

Good luck.

Congratulations with your good choice. Interesting, does a marriage in Hong Kong not requieres this affirmation? Or other docs from the Lao side, do you know? Is a HK marriage certificate internationally recognized?

Thanks all repliers.

No. UK and HK just require a Lao passport and the appropriate visa.

Edit: of course the marriage will not be recognised in Laos unless you get it authorised at a Lao Consulate, which opens up the Lao bureaucracy and payments especially if, like me, you have a child!

Thats incorrect. Passport only is NOT enough to get married even in HK. Still need to obtain "Affidavit of marriage capacity "from Lao Embassy or something equivalent which proof at least her single status.

(I doubt the rules have been changed regarding this matter recently.)
