Thailand confident EU will be satisfied with its progress of IUU solutions

BANGKOK, 31 December 2015 (NNT) - The Command Center for Combatting Illegal Fishing has expressed confidence that the EU will be satisfied with the progress of Thailand’s solutions to illegal fishing. It stressed that the Thai government was urgently passing laws related to fisheries.

Spokesman of the Command Center for Combatting Illegal Fishing Vice Admiral Chumpol Lumphikanont said the center’s meeting on Thursday approved the resolutions for more concrete solutions to the problem of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Thailand. The resolutions include the enactment of a law in preparation for the new fishing vessel registration system in March 2016. The meeting also agreed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor had to work together in expediting a MoU on foreign workers in the fishery sector.

Representatives of the EU will travel to Thailand to follow up on the country’s solutions to the IUU in January 2016.

The spokesman added that the center would speed up the enforcement of 43 auxiliary regulations after the Fisheries Emergency Decree was passed. The center would also urgently inform fishing vessel operators of the laws and regulations enforced to help the Thai fishing industry meet international standards, said the spokesman.

Then they might be in for a shock then, won't they ?

Perhaps they have something up their sleeve? A nice big aviation contract for Lufthansa Technik perhaps?

Doubt it, this is an inspection of the fishing industry !

I wouldn't be surprised if the Thais have got the 2 investigations mixed up. Perhaps the Lufthansa contract/bribe involves lots of free fish.

If the EU responds in the same cowardly manner that they did with regards to airline safety than Thailand has nothing too worry about.

I'm sure there will no Ban. To much politic and investment . Just like always. EU just talk to safe face :)

Thai government( read army )

Feel that acted in a way to counter balance wrong doings that even some high ranking members of their own were involved in committing against humanity, is somehow ok.

Even though they do so in many areas daily

Propaganda may work with limited affects at home .

But with the world?

Wheeling out people and saying the congressman from the opposite side of American politics is indicative of relations , may charm at home rising fears.

Scrambling to ease the slave / child labour trade with regulations to avoid sanctions might be better intended.

But it's a complicated situation.

It's like a op catching a man with his pants down and naked woman on the bed and her tied up.

And the man says he is letting her go and rescuing her.

It's difficult to believe Thais haven't systematically done this themselves .

Army documented involvement .

Defections to Australia by those digging up information, because fear of death.

The whole dark tier 3 ranking ( the lowest ) is tell tale things are bad.

Whether the lesser of two evils is allowing trade with stricter rules to try stem it.

Or say enough is enough and red card them is the big question.

But their smugness and self appointed righteousness in all not just this matter.

Makes me hope the Europeans decide to realistic and say enough grace periods and time was given.

And when detections of foul play perceived they hit them hard with sanctions.

And for once in 2016 the west strikes back and the injustices against humanity but the government of Thailand currently

You may well be right

So they've done nothing yet but they have plans !!

That'll fool those pesky EU people...

Yep, it will. They are happy to pursue austerity policies in the EU (and heavily regulate fishing) that are causing real hardship but as long as it is thousands of miles away the unregulated fishing and associated slave labour problems are OK. Just as long as they get their prawn cocktail sandwiches at meetings.

And if they also are as cowardly as the US is with all words about democracy but no bite Thailand has indeed nothing to worry about. (big words from US but no bite at all)

Thing is both the US and EU are all talk and no bite. I expect no problems for Thailand as both the EU and US are afraid to bite.

And still the Japanese can catch wales to eat and probably sell to others (named research)

Just 1 organisation makes it public, Greenpeace

But for many years it is a still on going issue, no actions of any government or organisation.

Probably indeed for Thailand the EU keeps a big fish in front of their nose, so they will act.

So the rich can get richer by deals.

WHAT?. You could bang out an MOU in 5 minutes flat. It isn't legally binding or anything, just an agreement to do something in the future, on which you broadly agree, and you can iron out the details later. And if two ministries haven't been able to agree the simple wording or framework for a pathetic MOU in the time it took to draft this typically banal press release, then there really is little hope for them.

I know it's hard for you but try and stay on topic considering this article has no mention about the US. Maybe you could start your own tread About the cowardly US. Edited by ldiablo
