Myanmar president calls for efforts in nation-building in new year

YANGON: In his New Year message to the nation, Myanmar President Thein Sein on Friday called on all citizens in the country to exert efforts in participating in nation-building tasks and to perform whatever duties assigned on them in the new year, according to the New Light of Myanmar.

He expressed confidence that the year 2016 will create golden opportunities, both in politics and economy.

The president urged the people to be involved in the political process to achieve success in democratic reform to enable sustainable peace, to guarantee freedom for each and every citizen, to ensure equal protection by the law and to promote the quality of life.

Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the election-winning National League for Democracy (NLD), also stressed in her similar message peace, unity and development, calling on the country’s people to work for the nation without end and bring the appropriate gifts for the development of the union as well as for peace and prosperity.

Speaker of the Union Parliament and the House of Representatives (Lower House) U Shwe Mann also called on the country’s people to strive to become good citizens and promote the country’s image when people at this time can set a higher hope of a change for the better, feeling secure both physically and mentally.

Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing emphasized in his message stability, unity and development.

Min Aung Hlaing pledged to cooperate with the new government and the people in accordance with the constitution to ensure a more stable, peaceful and prosperous nation in 2016 following the tradition of performing national duties.
