The numbers...WHO reported 24000 fatalities for 2014 which actually make the seven days of danger safer than a normal seven day period.

The figures I read yesterday in the Post were sourced to the Road Safety Centre and I have to say I've no idea how official or independent the body is. The centres' figures seem to be the only ones quoted so presumably are ' accepted ' although accuracy may be questionable.

Then comes this statement from an official spokeswoman which is at variance with the figures, not bad for a govt that regular warns, indeed threatens, those that would issue false information.

Total BS. Now at 292 dead Bangkok Post.

last year a lot more
Last year the death toll stood at 295 on day 5.

Edit.

Today's 'The Nation' reporting 260 dead by day five last year making this year much worse so far.

I remember the statemwnt that if you drink drive then we will impound tour vehicle....then Why if so many drivers were caught drink driving only 10% approx bikes abd cars were impounded....

Press statement prepared in mid November to celebrate the forhcoming success of the " Anti drink drive campaign " over the seven deadly days.

Off to celebrate Christmas and New Year in style now, after a job well done.

Seems this news article has had the legs chopped off in a big way. Nothing new of course, the officials in LOS all suffer the same heredity complaints:

"Foot in mouth"

"Mouth in motion before brain in gear"

"Look at me, stupid statement prior to facts being known "

Absolutely BS !!

Yesterday the numbers were up 11% compared to last year....................

less accidents but more fatal cases...? What a scam... (you are right)

So.. there actually was a lot more fuss about alcohol checkpoints, and I know that these had some impact in people's behavior.

Yet the number of accidents/deaths was not affected and even increased. (Though not a statistically relevant increase but whatever)

So the only logical conclusion is that alcohol doesn't contribute all that much to traffic accidents as is staunchly believed in many circles.

Also, the number of accidents and deaths for this holiday isn't very different compared to the Songkran holiday. So another thing that doesn't significantly impact traffic safety is the nature of the Songkran celebrarions. (As is staunchly believed in some other circles, mainly the Thaivisa demographic.)

Do these government officials live in the same Thailand, or at least talk to each other?

Road accidents drop substantially due to no drink driving campaign

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/883585-seven-dangerous-days-road-toll-worse-than-last-year-on-fifth-day/

Last year by the fifth day there had been 260 deaths, 2,542 injuries and 2,446 accidents, meaning 32 more deaths, 313 more injuries and 307 more accidents had been reported this year.

I still can't get my head round 525 bikes seized yet 5,040 charged with driving drunk. Does this mean that about 4,500 got back on their bikes and wobbled off ? Or maybe the BiBs revved the bike engines 'till they seized. Or maybe the drinks had to walk home.

This country is all about image with no substance, all about talks with little actions. What country on this planet can speak about setting up a special measure to reduce road deaths and announce it a success while the number of deaths went up. What kind of conscience one possess to be able to proudly announce the end of the measure to prevent senseless loss of life.

Once again it appears Thai government official numbers are diametrically opposed to each other. whistling.gif

Preposterous!

Just today, TV posted an article (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/883359-road-toll-rises-to-253-on-fourth-day/?p=10264099) which stated that 253 people died in road accidents since the beginning of these so-called "seven dangerous days", compared to 227 people during the same period last year. That is an INCREASE, not a "substantial drop"

According to another poster, the latest death toll figure now even stands at 292 dead.

So, where where where is that "substantial drop"? Ah, I see, fewer accidents overall... but not fewer deaths.

Perhaps Col. Sirichan thinks fewer road accidents with an actual increase in deaths resulting from these fewer accidents is a "success" that needs to be trumpeted...

To be fair, two buses colliding killing 30 people is one accident.

Ten motorcycles going off the road killing the ten riders is ten accidents.

Death toll and number of accidents, although related, are not the same thing in terms of numbers.

'... she said the NCPO felt sorry for the families of the accident victims ...' I'm sure they do. But it would be of more practical use were the NCPO and the RTP to actually get serious about the quality of Thai drivers, and of their knowledge of, and respect for, the law. Then the headline might be more about fact and less about wishful thinking.

This afternoon an accident happened right infront of me at Rachaprueck.

I heard a car racing and saw him go, a small Honda Jazz or so with spoilers/stickers and the lot. Big noise and loud bangs and they raced over Ratchaprueck.

Then in front of me a loud bang, debris flying around and the idiots drove into a pickuptruck right infront of the Mac donalds exit.

A passing man opened the door and one fell out from the backseat, his face full of blood. The other ones were still sitting in the car, faces all read of blood.

I didn't stop, felt more sorry for the pickupdriver whose car was also totall loss. The backaxle was laying on the road together with a wheel.

Last days the police is everywhere checking pickups and trucks which causes much congestion. It doesn't help though, we need the Police to patrol and drive around. There's much much money to be made by them so what are they waiting for? I saw 5 checkpoints today but they only care for trucks now.

Sad.....

Yes i agree but i drive motobike, i see them driving with a go-pro mounted on the crashhelmet here in BKK.

And what can you do against teenage boys racing on mainroads in busy hours? Buy a big fat Volvo is the only thing i can think of. And i also want a gun against agressive soidogs and snakes now.

Or i should live like a Thai, buy a Fortuner and never walk anywhere and only shop in the malls.
