Thai nurse's timely assistance saves German cyclist

Well done KhunSrikanya.

CPR is a skill that is easy to learn with a couple of hours practice. It should be taught to all senior school students and to all Government employees. Then there would be so many stories like this they wouldn't become news any more.

"and stuck a spoon in his mouth to prevent him from chewing his tongue."

That's interesting. No pulse and worried about biting his tongue. Biting tongue is the least of his worries. And yes during a seizure the recommend advice is not to put anything in their mouth. If she is a trained nurse she should have known better. However in a high stress situation things happen.

"and stuck a spoon in his mouth to prevent him from chewing his tongue."

Well done and all but I thought you weren't supposed to do this?

Still 30 minutes of CPR is impressive.

So who cares? She saved the man's life and I bet he does not give a rats about a spoon being stuck in his mouth to save lacerating his tongue.

This woman deserves every accolade which I am sure she will receive. A good story for a change and please don't try and diminish the achievement.

I care because putting a spoon in the mouth can be dangerous.

Pointing this out diminishes nothing this remarkable lady did. 30 minutes CPR is astonishing.

Get off your wannabe horse and accept that querying something does not equate bashing.

She did not give 30 minutes of CPR by herself there were two other people that were involved. Go to Bangkok Post and read their article plus look at the video. I do give her credit but the hype on her being is over done.

Public Health Minister thanks nurse for saving German tourist

SURAT THANI, 4 December 2015 (NNT) - Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsattayatorn sent a personal thank you letter to a nurse working at Surat Thani Hospital for saving a German tourist from a heart attack.

The nurse, Sikanya Cheurob, was riding a bicycle with a friend when she spotted the German tourist, Gunter Retsch. He had collapsed from a heart attack in front of Surat Thani Cancer Hospital. Ms. Sikanya and her friend were able to bring Gunter to Surat Thani Hospital just in time to revive him. Ms. Sikanya is a nurse at the Department of Male Neurosurgery.

The Public Health Minister said in the letter that Ms. Sikanya performed her duty as a nurse, as well as a Thai citizen, by being a good host to foreigners. Dr. Piyasakol added that she made the Ministry of Public Health and her hospital proud for her act of kindness.

According to the hospital, Gunter Retsch is in stable condition and can be taken off the medical ventilator. He has been given thrombolytic blood thinner to dissolve any dangerous clots and improve blood flow to his heart. Mr. Gunter is expected to remain under hospital care for at least four days until he can be released.

A stroke at 49, you never know what is around the corner or what is going to happen. Luckily for this man there was a nurse that knew what she was doing.

The nurse did a great job of stepping in and taking charge. Well done.

She called 1669 ...

Good move as no one else did

not criticising this angel at all just observing that in Europe, and must be USA too, ALL hospitals have resus teams whether they are a specialist cancer unit or not and they were 'outside' one?

Its the little people the average Joe who is the real savior in the world today. They worry about humanity not greed. Alright Mr. PM come out and really honor this lady as an outstanding citizen. There must be a medal somewhere in your large repertoire to honor her otherwise take one off of your uniform and present it to her.

Yes CPR for 30mins is impressive, even with the assistance of two others, which has been reported elsewhere. From my First Aid training, and IMHO, they would take turns and rotate the "chest pumping" with the "mouth to mouth" procedure.

The nurse would know exactly what ratios this should be. Modern instructions say that this is not so important, as is the breaking of the sternum or rib, as this is a small price to pay when the patient lives. The spoon, and biting the tounge would also be insignificant compared with living or dieing. Also the nurse would know best about inserting and removing the spoon to administer mouth to mouth.

The nurse quickly diagnosed a stroke, and not an epileptic fit or or other, which may be what your eluding to when you mentioned that it should not be used.

She did an amazing job which deserves all the credits due to her and the people who assisted her.

I'm a great believer that Basic First Aid should be taught in schools, but along with the "boarders" of ones limitations.

49 is a bit early to be having a stroke!

Well done to the nurse.

PS

Anyone notice the tsta? Another quality tourist.

Kudos to the nurse.

I presume you meant tats, but you were already too drunk to write or edit correctly.

Because he has tsta (medical problem?), i presume you think he is a lowlife, and should'nt be allowed to go on foreign holidays.

The ambulance driver who taught a group of us CPR said that the worst moment of his life was giving someone who was drunk, had eaten garlic and had vomited mouth to mouth resuscitation.

Well if she actually carried out CPR properly the guy would have broken ribs because of the compressions. I have been trained in CPR & do regular refresher courses & it is always the case if its done properly then ribs are broken. To carry out CPR for 30 minutes you would have to be very fit & strong, that little nurse would probably not be able to do it. When doing courses on the dummy even 5 mins & your worn out.

More likely an emboly. Happens quite a lot after flying long distance and not moving. Check for a fat foot.

"The department of Male Neurosurgery?" Possibly a different department for Female Neurosurgery? e.g. Male only and Female only wards?

"A heart attack' was mentioned twice in the article - a stroke, was not mentioned at all, but does it really matter? He was obviously in serious trouble,

and a nurse passing by on a bicycle possibly saved his life by her quick thinking, and well deserves the praise she is getting. Hopefully she will be thanked

properly by the German cyclist tourist when he is fit enough to do so, but your questions are a bit meaningless in the light of the situation. .

Has anyone watched the video? I did and what I saw was appalling. This guy did not even need CPR. I'm a former paramedic and CPR instructor trainer.

First of all, she was completely irrational trying to do chest compressions and yelling "hey you" shaking him violently. At no time did she even check his pulse or breathing. Even an untrained bystander would of noticed him moving his right arm and hand trying to push her off of him. Why would a nurse do CPR on someone who is clearly semi conscious? Baffling really. Watch the video and look closely at his skin color. Another clear indication that he was not in cardiac arrest at all. And sticking a spoon in anyone's mouth who is unconscious is ridiculous. The only thing I would of done in this situation is simply put him on his side in the recovery position and monitor his vitals until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital. She did not save his life. I have been to many cardiac arrest calls and have done CPR numerous times. The idea that she did CPR for 30 minutes and then he suddenly woke up might make for a feel good story but it is not is not medically possible.

good news and it's what Id expect from any nurse/doctor hopefully

PS 'outside Cancer Hospital'? it springs to mind that they could have helped? why 30 mins delay? anyway he got away with it good luck

That's what I was wondering also, good Samaritan deed of the nurse aside.

The German guy suffers his attack apparently very near to the local cancer hospital. The nurse calls emergency services and it takes a half hour for an ambulance to arrive.

But no one comes from, or is sought from, the cancer hospital so nearby in the meantime??? And of course, no addressing or questioning of that issue in the news report.

The guy in this case lucked out. Most of the time, more than likely, it just would have been another farang death in Thailand while waiting for long-delayed medical help to arrive.

oh dear, you better post here your full qualifications experience where you have worked in your career and we will get independent advice from a suitable academic to assess your assessment of the situation.
